If possible, download a free trial of Norton AntiVirus 2010. After years of producing really bad software Norton's lastest version has received rave reviews. In my experience the free anti-virus and anti-malware programs are not that good at cleaning up a contaminated PC.
expat
So Norton has cleaned up their act? I'm wary--the last time I installed a norton product, it wasn't until I reinstalled my operating system that I was able to get rid of all traces of it. It would take a lot of convincing to prove to me they had reformed.

Boo Radley
There's a program called WinDirStat which displays a graphical representation of your various file types and is apparently good at finding what swallowed your disk space. Might be worth a try. http://windirstat.info/
Flashermac
Thanks, Boo. I'll give it a try. Whenever I try to download a new virus program or even update my old one, it always fails. A nasty bug that prevents you from getting rid of it? Flashermac
Damnation! Got the same result: "WinDirStat 1.1.2 Setup could not be downloaded." Nothing seems to be loading since whatever it was ate my gigabyte.

A clean install of Windows7 is almost probably the best solution.
Boo Radley
Haven't used Win 7 before, but as expat said above, the space may be due to restore points. May be worth trying to delete any restore points before reinstalling to see if the space returns. In addition to the link he gave, here's a couple more: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/330-system-protection-turn-off.html http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/336-system-protection-restore-points-delete.html
