Googled for "hard drive suddenly filled" and got some interesting results. Concensus seems to be malware or a hijack. :(

If possible, download a free trial of Norton AntiVirus 2010. After years of producing really bad software Norton's lastest version has received rave reviews.

In my experience the free anti-virus and anti-malware programs are not that good at cleaning up a contaminated PC.

So Norton has cleaned up their act?

I'm wary--the last time I installed a norton product, it wasn't until I reinstalled my operating system that I was able to get rid of all traces of it. It would take a lot of convincing to prove to me they had reformed.

Yes Norton has. See here.

Damnation! Got the same result: "WinDirStat 1.1.2 Setup could not be downloaded." Nothing seems to be loading since whatever it was ate my gigabyte.

:cussing:

Your PC seems to be invected with really nasty malware which has taken over your PC.

A clean install of Windows7 is almost probably the best solution.

Haven't used Win 7 before, but as expat said above, the space may be due to restore points.

May be worth trying to delete any restore points before reinstalling to see if the space returns.

In addition to the link he gave, here's a couple more:

16 GB of restore points in two weeks is extremely unlikely...
