27 reds imprisoned for 6 months

Pathumwan district court handed down six-month jail term to 27 red-shirts who were arrested from Friday's clashes between protesters and troops, Tharit Pengdit, chief of the Department of Special Investigation, said on Saturday evening.

 

They violated the emergency decree enforced in the capital by engaging in political gatherings of more than five people, Mr Tharit said.

 

He called on the general public not to join the illegal protest.

Supporters of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) of Pathum Thani threatened to seize government offices in the province if the government does not stop the army's operations that lead to the loss of protesters' lives, Sornrak Pakjai, a red-shirt leader of Pathum Thani, said on Saturday evening.

 

The supporters would also block traffic in the province if the government still orders troops to shoot at innocent people, he said.

 

Mr Sornrak also said that residents of Pathum Thani would obstruct troops if they try to enter the province.

Princess gives food, water to hospital

 

 

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn has expressed her concern for the patients and medical personnel at Chulalongkorn Hospital and donated food and water, hospital director Adisorn Patradul said on Saturday.

 

The princess gave 800 meals and 10,000 bottles of drinking water together with rice, electric fans and mobile air conditioners to the hospital, Dr Adisorn said.

 

[color:red]He said restaurants in the hospital remained close and transporting food supplies was difficult after the government's Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) had cut off power, water and food supplies to the prolonged anti-government rally at Ratchaprasong district.[/color]

 

He said Canadian journalist Nelson Ran, who was shot in the leg during the clashes between the red-shirt protesters and soldiers on Friday, was now in a safe condition.

 

The journalist was transferred to BNH Hospital earlier today.

Death toll from clashes at 22

Six people were killed and 31 wounded in Saturday's clashes between troops and anti-government protesters, Erawan emergency centre said on Saturday night.

 

The death toll over the past two days of clashes has risen to 22, the centre said.

 

According to the centre, 172 people have been wounded in the clashes.

 

All of the dead were civilians, and no foreigners have been killed, it said.

Reds block expressway exit at Bon Kai

Bon Kai area has been declared live-firing zone on Saturday evening, according to reports.

 

Troops and red-shirt protesters have clashed in the area since Friday.

 

At about 7.30pm, hundreds of protesters gathered around the exit of the Rama IV expressway in Bon Kai area. They reportedly burned tyres to block vehicles from coming down the expressway.

 

The action came after they received reports that troops would try to bring in reinforcement to the area by using the expressway.

Poll: 51% support government's action

 

 

 

A recent survey conducted by Suan Dusit Poll revealed that many respondents supported the government's plan to send in troops to deal with the seven-week anti-government protest at Bangkok's Ratchaprasong commercial district.

 

The survey involved 1,387 respondents across the country.

 

51.33 per cent said they agreed with the government's move to reclaim Ratchaprasong by cutting the power, water and food supplies to the protest venue as the country and the economy could be further damaged if it persisted.

 

40.16 per cent disagreed with the government's move as it had resulted in the loss of lives and properties, adding that the country's image would be more negative. They said they did not want to see people from the same country killing each other.

 

Asked about the attack on red-shirt leader and rogue army officer Maj-Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol, known as Seh Daeng, 49.06 per cent said they felt sorry for Seh Daeng. 36.73 per cent condemned the attack. 14.21 per cent said the attack on Seh Daeng would bring both positive and negative effects on the government and the anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD).

 

61.98 per cent said the Seh Daeng incident would exacerbate the situation as it would bring more hatred and retribution among the demonstrators.

 

On the respondents' ways to deal with the rally if they run the government, 53.25 per cent said they would continue negotiating with the protest leaders. 17.12 per cent said they would take action and make decisions more cautiously.
