Hi,

Funny to see the reaction of Americans here :)

The stats do not mesh with their ideas/opinions so they must be wrong. After all, owning a gun is a GOD GIVEN RIGHT!!! :)

Sanuk!

PS Banning alcohol would likely have an adverse effect as it would mean it would go underground. People would still (ab)use it, but would likely have to spend a lot more money on it.

They tried this in the US, didn't work.

reread the article, it says suicide by firearm...ok so they banned guns and instead of shooting themselves, they slit their wrists or jump off bridhes, does that really mean anything? Is it really an improvement? I'd like to see if the suicide rate as a whloe is up or down, then we can have that debate either way.

As I said, both sides skew the stats to suit their purposes. Years back, the NRA stated that in the USA, firearms were used over 1 million times a year to stop crime, save lives property etc...the FBI claimed it was more like 100,000 the anti gunners said it was neither...and had their own stats that show how many people shot a family member "by accident"...apples and oranges...both sides bullshitting.

'Why have Americans suddenly become more violent?'

I'm not sure they have. But there are a lot more Americans these days. It's still a huge country but it's getting a little crowded in places. There are a lot more social pressures nowadays which means more people going postal.

Americans more violent? About a mile or less from me, there are 3 rival gangs, Nortenos, Surenos and MS 13, largely comprised of immigrants, legal and not from Mexico and Central America. So by and large, not Americans, not that is matters.

i dont want to see booze banned or guns. in responsible hands both have a place in society, in the wrong hands its a big menace, both in the wrong hands is most worrying!!!

We've even got loonies in the States who want to disarm the police. Well, that's fine ... as long as the bad guys don't carry firearms either.

It is very difficult to own a firearm legally in Thailand, except maybe a muzzle loading rifle or musket. (Upcountry folks use them for hunting.) It takes a permit to buy a pistol from a gunshop. That is the reason no one ever gets shot in LOS!

;)

In 2006/2007 the US had 28000 fire-arm related homicides. The UK had 59. Neither country is a frontier anymore. But I don't know how a country with 28000 homicides can even claim to be civilized.

The average American teenager has seen thousands of TV shootings. But those shootings are always sanitized. You never see anybody rolling around in agony with red blood gushing everywhere. God forbid we should have red blood on TV. The lack of consequences on TV causes blood to be spilled on the streets in real life.

But TV is not entirely to blame. Americans want to see TV shootings. American culture is obsessed with guns. The gun deaths will not be curtailed until America grows up and realizes it is no longer a frontier country.

So there are twice as many killings in LOS then the USA and 4 X's more in the USA then in the UK...interesting.

I own firearms but they are locked up and unloaded, so slim chance I will be shooting anyone and gun carrying friends of mines also have their guns in a gun safe, so little chance there.

There are extremely few shootings by "normal" people. 99.9% of the shootings are by illegal activities, in the USA, IMO.

OK, just a WAG on the 99.9% but might be close.

Well, to take this from the opposite side... how many people were killed because they did not have a gun to protect themselves? Hmmm. Bet ya it's a lot fucking more than 200 that died from the hands of a murderer due to the fact they could not protect themselves and maybe if they had a gun, knew how to use it properly, they'd still be alive, maybe?

Oh, that's right, the cops will be there to protect you if there is a problem and your life is in imminent danger. 5555555555555555! You gonna die muthafucka! Can you hear the police sirens yet coming to save your ass? Didn't think so. They'll be there in an hour or so, maybe. :-)

Gimme my gun and my right to protect my person, my family, and my property with it, at least until the cops and civilization comes around to protect my ass from the bad guys. :susel:

(This post is not directed at Mekong or anyone in particular, but is just a general purpose on topic post in the discussion.)

Thanks, now please pass the ammo.

------------------

"Most of Australia's 2100 suicides each year do not involve firearms, making the 200 lives saved as a result of the firearm ban small in relation to the suicide total."

Exactly.

"But Dr Neill said applying an accepted financial value to each of these human lives resulted in an economic boost of $500 million a year - an outcome, she said, that represented $800,000 for each weapon destroyed."

That is some seriously convoluted thinking and reasoning there.
