That poem was an expression of disdain for the bullshit going on in the US at the time, I find it ironic how much rings true today. Except for the irradiated flesh part. Of course the part about the masses elevating fools into rich heroes is as true as ever. A look at Rod Blagojevich, Dick Cheney, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, or half the assholes in Hollywood will give you a nice perspective on the wonders of American Culture today (to be fair Bieber is Canadian, but we're the dipshits that made him a god).
