The foreigners also helped ruin it, by driving up the prives and the illegals make it even worse. In all seriousness, there was talk SFO would become the USA's first fully gentrified city. SO far that has not happened.

 

But for anyone who thinks "over spending" on things doesn't negatively effect a local economy, take a look at SFO real estate. The constant over bidding really drove it up, and even with the prices falling and people losing homes, it remains artificially high.
