sidsanuk
Hmm. Some of what you said puzzles me further - I've read that Thai is a relatively difficult language to learn. I Guess I could learn basic phrases in a couple days, but conversational Thai? A few basic phrases of 'pigin' or 'tourist' Thai will be very easy to pickup and will make your stay much more enjoyable. It's easy to pickup a few basics. Sit in a bar with a dictionary and get one of the girls to teach you some basic words! It's fun. (just remember to keep buying her lady drinks for her time)
The_Munchmaster
Thai is a simple language (contrary to the opinion of the twat who once tried to convince me that Thai was a much more complicated language than English!) and is relatively easy to learn to speak to a reasonable level. Reading and writing it though is another story.
simie
Munchie, I always found Thai very difficult, mainly because I suspect I'm tone deaf?! Years ago I did have lessons and learn quite a lot of Thai (most of which I have now forgotten) but could never get the tones right. Simie. sidsanuk
Although I am moving elsewhere as a semi-vacation I will still work quite a bit online (the nature of my gig) so taking the time to practice another language will not be possible. This language issue may sway me towards the Philippines. I know they all speak english over there, but does anyone know if their signs, menus, etc generally have English captions as well? Don't get hung up about language. Get out of your comfort zone, (which I suspect may be a new concept for you) Get out there and live a little :-) You'll have more fun...
