Steve
Could have been from North Dakota. There are small towns in Nord Dakota where German is still the first language. I had a classmate from Strassburg, ND who spoke English with a German accent. His family had been in the US for about 100 years. p.s. The capital of North Dakota is Bismark. There are a few places around the country like that. I have two very good friends one from from Ohio and another from Missouri who speak German. One learned it from a grandfather, the other grew up in a small town that was founded by German immigrants.
Flashermac
Southern Pennsylania kept its German dialect until about the 1930s and '40s. Television has taken a heavy toll, plus schools there are no longer allowed to teach in German. The locals now are starting up language schools to try to preserve what had been their native tongue for several centuries in America. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_in_the_United_States p.s. My mother is bilingual German-English. She learnt it from her grandparents and great grandmother, whom she spent a lot of time with.
