Mekong Posted September 11, 2013 Report Posted September 11, 2013 As any expat of even a visitor for that matter knows Thailand has a 30-40% "Luxury Goods Tax" but the finance ministry are seeking cabinet approval to have it reduced to 0-5% within a couple of months first on Perfumes, Watches and Clothing. http://www.neurope.eu/news/wire/thailand-cut-import-tariff-luxury-goods
Flashermac Posted September 11, 2013 Report Posted September 11, 2013 Next after that will be Ferraris and Lamborghinis

Mekong Posted September 13, 2013 Author Report Posted September 13, 2013 A proposal to cut import duty on luxury goods has hit a wall after Deputy Finance Minister Benja Louichareon said the move would hurt Thai manufacturers. She said she had confirmed her stance with Deputy... http://www.bangkokpost.com/breakingnews/369463/benja-opposes-luxury-duty-cuts
radioman Posted September 13, 2013 Report Posted September 13, 2013 Got to wonder just which luxury goods would impact just which Thai manufacturers. Oh, now I get it. Those fake goods manufacturers must be protected I guess.
think_too_mut Posted September 18, 2013 Report Posted September 18, 2013 My Toyota LandCruiser 200 is 70,000$ in Japan. Saw Thai sites, price is 7.8 million baht. Almost 3 times the price in Japan. Categorized as luxury and heavily taxed. SunBelt Asia in Stick's column, their advice section a few weeks ago, said the owner, a Thai national, may import it with not so high duty, if the owner had lived abroad and the car has been owned for more than 18 months. Exactly that time, now. The car is in my name but legally married, should qualify for that? Or any other car we might had owned prior to the move for more than 18 months (Toyota Prius hybrid by then).
Mekong Posted September 18, 2013 Author Report Posted September 18, 2013 No, the Vehicle has to be registered in your wife's name and been used by her for 18 Months prior to moving back to Thailand, for a Foreigner to import a vehicle tax free you need to have lived / worked in Thailand over 12 months and have valid WP. http://www.customs.go.th/wps/wcm/connect/custen/individuals/importing+personal+vehicle/importingpersonalvehicle+
think_too_mut Posted September 18, 2013 Report Posted September 18, 2013 Thanks for the reply, then, our next car should be in her name, or both names. It's a bit odd, a legally married couple should be able to bring their used possessions after years abroad, a car along with the household items.
dean Posted September 18, 2013 Report Posted September 18, 2013 I'd like to take advantage of importing a car but, living in US, have no desire to convert it to left hand driving. I may consider a high end motorcycle when the time comes to move back. How would Thai authorities know if the Thai wife drove it, even if it was registered to her? Would joint title with the spouse count?
