Old Hippie
No joke, I know someone who asked me to look into shipping a Tuk Tuk to the USA. Any one know where to start? Price of same fees etc...? Thanks.
spirit_of_town_hall
Presumably the cheapest option would be to buy one, from a Tuk Tuk guy, keep it outside you hotel whilst your sorting out all the export shit with an agent. The process for getting it back to the US would be the same as taking back some golf clubs, its just a bigger item. Go for it!! STH
Guest
I believe they cost about U.S.$1200, and I'm sure I saw an adderss for the tuk-tuk company in Lonely Planet. Will check tonight.
Guest
Whoops! Actually, I meant U.S.$1200 is the cost of the tuk-tuk itslef, not of shipping it. I'll still look up that address, as they might know about this themselves.
Guest
OH: Here's the address and telephone number of the tuk-tuk company itself. They might know about these things (and yes, they do cost around U.S.$1200): Tuk-Tuk Industry Thailand 463-465 Prachathipok Road Bangkok 02-437-6983
Guest
I hope that someone will post any info that is found about this. I have had several people ask me about this and I wasn't sure about the legalities regarding it being a "vehicle".
Stickman
Its not what you asked about, but back in New Zealand abotu 5 years ago, someone imported one and started using it as a taxi. They had to spend A LOT of money on it to make it roadworthy.... Stick
Guest
There's a firm in the UK who specialise in importing them !!! Take a look at the following website: http://www.goodbyesociallife.com/tuktuk/ Although these people import to the UK not the US, contact with them may give you some experienced insight as to what is involved. There's a message board and contact form on the website.
Guest lazyphil
A Thai restaurant not far from me recently imported one, they use it for home deliveries. Had to adjust the engine/emmisions etc!! Looks and sounds bizzare in this quiet little English village! Not sure how much etc.
Sukhumvit
Check out the website. Seven and a half grand. Fug me. You could buy a lot of sticky rice for that. They must have some serious moolah in your local Thai restaurant if they can lash out that much on a promo vehicle which will probably only get dusted off once a year.
