Police embarrass themselves on social media, posting a group photo of themselves standing under a “Suckers†sign in the city.

Police have learned first-hand how imprudent use of social media can backfire after a group photo of the police chief in front of a go-go bar named Suckers brought the force endless ridicule.

In a bid to assure tourists of their safety following the Erawan shrine bomb, national police chief Pol Gen Somyot Poompunmuang led a group of senior police to Soi Nana last Friday evening.

According to a post on the police spokesman’s Facebook, the visit was intended to reassure visitors that police would guarantee their safety.

Pol Gen Somyot was quoted as saying European tourists remain confident about their safety and will continue to visit Thailand, based on his chats with them.

The police’s spokesman team uploaded a few photos which showed the smiling police chief shaking hands with foreign revellers at bars in Soi Nana.

No doubt in the hope of showing the force had been hard at work, the team also uploaded a photo showing the police chief and his senior officers talking to reporters in front of a go-go bar at Nana Plaza in Sukhumvit Soi 4.

The problem was the colourful neon sign right above the stern-looking policemen, which reads: “Suckersâ€. The picture instantly caught the attention of netizens.

One Twitter user remarked: “Wait. Not only is that picture real, Thai police also put it out on their official Twitter feed!â€

Another user, Kaewmala, wondered whether the police are playing reverse psychology by calling the bad guys “suckersâ€.

Another said: “Thai police made an announcement yesterday after searching the bars. The photo explained all.’’

The photo has since been deleted.

It does take some of the seriousness out of the situation. This is why, even though I'm now a primary fan of a different country to LOS, I still follow the news and politics of Thailand avidly. There's a TV series in this lot.

As noted above, when there's a serious situation, two bombs exploding in the centre of the LOS universe, the guys in charge, amongst their other blunders, rush to one of the most famous red light districts on the planet, which the Police are notorious for having significant if not overwhelming financial interests in, and stage a public meet and greet to 'reassure' foreigners for whom sex and gogos is great entertainment.

This points to two things for me.

1 - the real idiocy of the Thai centrist view of the world, or Thai-ness.

2 - the actual importance of the dollar spend of the Falangs visiting the sex industry.
