Yehtmae
Hmmm. Opening 2004? Definately means they're expecting to have all the bars demolished within the next month or two. From yesterdays Bangkok Post: Sofitel Sukhumvit due 2004 Accor will bring its five-star Sofitel brand to the heart of Thailand's capital city with the opening of the Sofitel Sukhumvit Bangkok by the end of 2004. The 380-room hotel will be one of the city's most prominent luxury properties located in the city centre on Sukhumvit Soi 13, near the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre (QSNCC), and adjacent to the Bangkok Skytrain and soon-to-open Bangkok Mass Rapid Transit underground system. The hotel will feature three restaurants, including two themed F&B outlets, in addition to two bars and a nightclub. Besides its proximity to QSNCC, Sofitel Sukhumvit will be well positioned to attract significant convention and meetings business. Its ballroom will be able to accommodate over 1,000 guests for dinner. It will also have an additional 10 meeting rooms for private events or corporate training programmes. Sofitel Sukhumvit will pamper guests at its exclusive spa and fitness centre, while business travellers will enjoy the Sofitel Club executive floors and the spacious Sofitel Club Lounge. Deputy Chairman Asia Pacific, Jochen Dobel, said the hotel's location on lower Sukhumvit was perfect for Sofitel's upmarket position. ``Sukhumvit Road is a hub of Thailand's resident foreign community and is popular with both leisure and corporate travellers. The Sofitel Sukhumvit will be well positioned near fashionable shopping centres and well-known tourist attractions, in addition to the offices of major multi-national companies operating in Thailand. ``As the management company we are pleased to enjoy such a prime location and high-quality product, and we look forward to successfully managing the hotel for many years to come.'' Mr Dobel said the strength of the Sofitel brand, combined with Accor's global sales, reservation and distribution system would give Sofitel Sukhumvit a market advantage in Bangkok's competitive hotel sector. ``Lower Sukhumvit is a very competitive market, and Accor believes that our global sales and reservation network will be an important component to ensure the hotel's continued success.'' Sofitel Sukhumvit Bangkok will be Accor's fifth Sofitel in Thailand after the Sofitel Central Hua Hin Resort, Sofitel Central Plaza Bangkok, Sofitel Raja Orchid Khon Kaen and the Sofitel Silom Bangkok. Over the past two years, Sofitel has become a benchmark for brand expansion with prestigious openings in key international cities such as New York, Philadelphia, Paris and Tokyo. The brand's strategic development this year includes the opening of over ten flagship properties, namely the Sofitel Silom Bangkok, Sofitel Buenos Aires, Sofitel Chicago Water Tower, Sofitel Cologne am Dom, Sofitel St James London, Sofitel Royal Lyon, Sofitel Montreal, Sofitel Marrakech, Sofitel Palm Beach Marseille, Sofitel Venezia in Isola and Sofitel Lafayette Square Washington D.C. Meanwhile, the Sofitel Silom Bangkok celebrated its official opening on September 1 with special rates for travel agents starting from US$65 until 31 December 2002. The US$65 rate includes accommodation in a deluxe room with breakfast. For US$79 travel agents can stay in an exclusive Sofitel Club Room with access to the Sofitel Club Lounge for breakfast, happy hour cocktails, and 15-minutes free Internet access. The hotel requests travel agents show an IATA identification card. The rates are exclusive of 17% tax and service charge. The Sofitel Silom Bangkok is situated in the heart of Bangkok's business district.
Guest
No mention of whether they will be guest friendly or not. But seriously I wonder what implications if any this will have for the big T.
sanukdee
Here is some news from this weeks Night Owl column. <<- The court has decided in favour of the publicans, their contracts valid _ until they expire in about three years. Which means Clinton Plaza won't imminently be knocked down to make way for a Sofitel. Intimidation was tried and didn't work. The only way to get them out pronto is by paying them off individually. And each demands five big ones. I'll keep you Posted.>> If true this is very good news for the remaining bars in Clinton Plaza.

sanukdee
I could do without another 5 star chain hotel on Sukumvit. Brings in the wrong kind of tourist and drives the prices up. IMHO and most of all this hotel is displacing prime sanuk habitat
Lord Toad
Surprise that news is out of date. The last court ruling (8 days ago) went the other way!
Old Hippie
Doubt this is over anytime soon. If the bars get "5 big ones" each, then it will just drive up the prices of new bars, and thus the prices over all. WWonder if LOS will be a bargin much longer...When I last checked, Charlie's Angels was closed, that whole side of CEP was leveled or gutted, up to Suzy bar ( they had 2 girls and a bartender, no lights etc...moved across to Soi 10). sanukdee
I wouldn't be surprised. The only thing certain when dealing with the law and lawyers is the expense.
