The obvious question for all of Thailand is the effect this will surely have on tourism. The world knows that bird flu is back -- and now there is international coverage of this atrocity. A Swede has already posted on Farangman's board asking for advice if it is SAFE to visit Thailand now. He and his friends are worried about a Bali type bombing. I think that is very unlikely, but a lot of tourists may not.

The irony of this is that the previous PM -- Chuan Leekpai -- is himself a southerner. Though a Buddhist, he understands the problems with the Muslim provinces and there was next to no trouble down there while he was in office. But the current PM's answer to all problems is force and coercion. Surprisingly enough, violence tends to breed more violence.

The Thai papers are covering this in detail, with sickening colour photos as usual. The Nation is attacking the PM's disregard of human rights quite openly. It will be interesting to see where this all leads.

Agreed, and for those who don't have access to that article, I am going start another thread with a cut and paste from that article. (Not trying to start multiple threads on the same subject, but the article is so strong and startling that it deserves to be higlighted, monitors, feel free to move if you deem appropriate)

Then again, is it wise to compare as when he was in office, there was no 9/11, Bali, Afganistan and Iraq.......

Different times.

Taksin's comment about the fasting causing the deaths is unbelievable, especially during Ramadan. I was watching CNN and they reported Taksin's comment. It sounds really bad to the outside world - VERY embarrassing for the CEO.

Actually very similar to his comments regarding to the 2500+ deaths in his infamous first war on drugs. "Most deaths have been caused by gangs killing their own people"

So here we go again: By fasting they actually killed themsleves :banghead:

Any comments from the king on this masacre?

In Thailand everything is about saving face, but Thaksin lost it today big time all over the world. How can Thai people tolerate such a madman as their PM?

Look Thailand is a poor 3rd world country. You have criminals killing policemen, monks, soldiers and civilians. There's no Queensbury's rules.

So 100 people lost their lives, they were attacking police stations... They had looted an army base 7 months before....

Do you really give a toss about this...

Maybe South Thailand will be a more peaceful place now.

Lets support the Thai PM and the Thai Kings Forces, after all the Thai King is Chief of the army and airforce..

>>>So 100 people lost their lives, they were attacking police stations... They had looted an army base 7 months before....<<<

what are you talking about?

those people were thai citicens having a demonstration, a constitutional right. demanding the release of six people who were arrested in connection with a weapons theft, who were barbarically tortured during the questioning, whose lawyer was abducted and most possibly killed by several high ranked police officers. six people who it still is very doubtful if they have had anything to do with that weapons theft.

these demonstrators were arrested, treated like cattle (the TV footage really speaks for itself). and then 78 of them died of suffocation in police custody.

>>>Maybe South Thailand will be a more peaceful place now.<<<

are you joking?!

how can you imagine that south thailand will be more peaceful now after 78 people died a horrific death in police custody, and the prime minister had not the sense to even apologise to the relatives?

this is another highlight in the atrocious human rights record of this government, after last year's murdered in the drugwar, now this outrage.

WTF do wou want - thailand having another civil war again?!

how can you applaud when human beings died such a death? it is beyond me how anyone can feel anything other than disgust at such incidents.
