rookie
James May is a journalist and TV presenter. Maybe the USAF considers the good publicity as money well spent. Thanks for the posting Flashermac! Inspiring! And, the U-2 plane is now 53-years old! I wonder what area-51 has since developed? James May is a _wealthy_ journalist and he is also one of the presenters on the British TV automobile show "Top Gear".
Palatkik
All paid for form UK British TV license fee payers I would guess? Cannot knock it tho as May and his two co presenters on Top Gear pull in all the money to fund other BBC stuff from the world sales of their programs. Flashermac
My expectation is that this flight was fully paid for by the passenger. Wudja wanna bet? You think the USAF does this sort of thing for free?
Nervous God
Maybe - but the space shuttle - that was COOL!
LizardKing
I would certainly hope so.
Old Hippie
My expectation is that this flight was fully paid for by the passenger. Wudja wanna bet? You think the USAF does this sort of thing for free? Actually, yes, they do this sort of stuff for free. Publicity etc...we have Fleet week every year, the Blue Angels park on our ramp, and we have a big open house (anyone local want to go this year? let me know) They do an airshow on Sat and Sun and often take local officials and reporters on their practice runs, no charge. The U2 flight was most likely part of some story or what not. Didn't Walter Cronkite go on a B52 bomb run over Hanoi?
Flashermac
Did Jane Fonda shoot at Walter? If it was for publicity, then the Air Farce paying for it would be understandable. It was shown worldwide on the BBC and is now on line.
Nervous God
Did Walter hit the target?
