  1. hotel solo soi 2. easy walk to nana, soi 4 and the lower suk carnival (they also supply a comp tuk tuk if you're feeling lazy). pool is clean and absent of weird shit. a bit yuppified but the rooms are fucking sweet and inexpensive. guest friendly if you want to have mates over for tea.
  2. don't even think about trying to jai-rai the JaiRai. (does that work in Thai?)
  3. In the murky haze of this crazy mixed-up world an occasional beam of light finds it way through. somehow. thanks for the read. not too shabby.
  4. They are from the Philippines and most of them are pretty cool and good-hearted. The food on the other hand.... well, it depends. btw - The Tapas Cafe on the sub soi off soi 11 is without a doubt some of the best non-thai food I had in Bangkok - and it's not expensive. One of the very real gems of that area.
  5. “‘Respect for religion’ has become a code phrase meaning ‘fear of religion.' Religions, like all other ideas, deserve criticism, satire, and yes, our fearless disrespect.†- Salman Rushdie
  6. Related: SHITE TV on channel 6 announced that the Ministry of Farang Spending will formalize it's partnership with the separate Ministry of Farang Suicides. In Chiang Mai alone there will be 18.5 million baht earmarked for Farang Management in 2015. Once the goal is reached for any particular Farang's desired spending in the country, management of that Farang's activities will become the responsibility of the Suicide Ministry which will instill safeguards to ensure no unwanted attention on lucrative revenue areas.
  7. he's not the only one with the lesser of two evils perspective. time will tell. wish him the best and sad to see he has to leave out of worry, hopefully someday can make it back in a time when dissenting views are given a little more leeway. best of luck mr nostitz.
  8. New York Post is kinda a borderline tabloid, just FYI. That said - a lot of smart people are expressing skepticism that it was in fact North Korea (the primary driver is the Stammberger fella from Norse though, he's been showing up on all the tech blogs last few days). I've been chuckling and fascinated by the range of reactions to the film just in the small circle of people I know and/or work with. First group - saw going to see it as a subtle act of defiance against tyranny (chuckle). Some (quasi-hipsters) were quick to condemn going to see the film as uncool because if it was popular with the first group, and there was such a public fuss to release it, it must be awful (chuckle). And then there are the techies trying to demonstrate the people's gullibility and the fact that the government is in error and has been duped by hackers from Russia into blaming NK (chuckle, either way). I'll get around to watching it in the next couple weeks. Even if it's the worst film in the history of mankind - it's now an official socio/political catalyst of.... something. I like the pairing of Rogen and Franco and enjoyed Pineapple Express. People whose opinion I trust give The Interview a B, not great but worth seeing.
  9. nicky was pleasant and a bit funny. i remember his wild hairstyle (re: canine einstein) and him just kinda hovering around for a few moments and checking you out before getting bored moments later and wandering off. only to circle back around randomly. had nice intelligent eyes for a dog - actually had a picture of him on my phone that was stolen in bkk - it was that crazy ass hair i had to. rip
  10. got it. ขอบคุณนะครับ
  11. couple thai friends call me p'jao-paw (as a joke). how do you write in thai? (was going to use for my season's greetings) also how do you write "Pii" as in big brother Pii, as in P'flashermac? gratzi...

Before I left last year I saw the civil servants shaking down people for baht every day on suk - area starting around soi 11 up to 33. They'd follow prospects and walkie-talkie each other and then... kablam, stop them, scare them and hit them with a fine. They wore police like uniforms but weren't actually police, but civil servants whose job is to monitor littering (and ???), and impose fines - (I initially thought they were police also). Have questioned everyone I know still living in that area and nobody knows anyone who was forced to go through a street piss test. Yeah, they read the same story on a few websites (stickboy, coconuts, thaivisa) - but nobody actually knows anyone verifiable who was stopped by police to take a piss test right off the street. So curious to hear more about that? Took some pics of the litter police in action - a very happy lot (their victims not so much).
  15. Oh I definitely think the cop was thinking that what the fuck is wrong with you. And -- WHO was filming this, with the cop and everyone else just kinda acting nonchalant about it, even the girls. I honestly love this video because the scene is so... bizarre. Drunk farang doesn't like his checkbin, and takes a bevy of karaoke dancers down to the police station to have a nice rational chat about the large bill and lack of 'specials.' And it was a calm rational chat. ONLY in Thailand.
  16. Have been working out the details of a new Buddha sect I'm going to start up for those who aren't quite ready to leave the base level of the earth and be elevated to the state of Nirvana. There's still much work to be done down on earth after all. To maintain that non-elevation we'd carry out a ritual of mild tam-bap, collecting whisky and cigarettes for alms, and we'd even accept donations of that most illicit contraband --> academic texts critical of the government. Then during the day we'd go carousing with women, catching 1st class flights, and slapping all those we deemed stupid. I call it the guan-deen path.
  17. Monks on the street I typically give something to, even if it's just some of the food I picked up (in the morning). Were I the guy slapped in this video would I have responded physically? No. But I would have had to get out of the room. Would I have wanted to kick him in the nuts... oh yeah. Did you see the write up in the Bangkok Post about this. Evidently the guy is an English teacher and has released a video telling people he has no ill will towards the monk and wants no trouble. A lot of Thai folks speaking out on his behalf, supposedly he's a pretty nice guy. The story is he gave up his seat for two women and sat adjacent to the monk, who was sleeping. When the monk awoke he tried to explain the change in seats but the guy couldn't understand his broken Thai or English, so he said - that's fine, that's fine. The monk says he reacted violently because he thought the foreigner was calling him a 'fai' buffalo (I thought it was Kwai!?). Regardless, the monk has supposedly dedicated his life to 'tam boon' (is that right Flash) - doing good things for people. No excuse for violently abusing a stranger when you're not even sure what they're saying. Especially not in the role of public esteem this man has assumed.
  18. Thought he was low key and funny (i'm the opposite of low key when alcohol's involved), obviously angling for some sort of empathy from the police. I like the way he kept emphasizing 'mai mii tam arai "special" to the officer -- like hey dude, they want all this money and I didn't even get anything special. The Thai police are almost the last folks I'd turn to for any resolution of disputes, so this was highly interesting to watch -- and hence my curiosity of the outcome.
  19. Ever seen a monk kicked in the nuts? Sorry, just going with my initial reaction.
  20. Good for him for standing his ground and actually going with them to the police station, also not acting like an ass but reasonably making his case. Thai's not too bad either (def better than mine). Do you know what the outcome was?
  21. But what about what is happening now Flash. The revamping of the Educational curricula to heavily emphasize meeting the junta's idea of a good citizen (eg, do not question authority, no gathering in groups to criticize the gov, critical learning materials that could cause divisiveness being removed, even the recent edict to erase any mention of redshirts and Thaksin from history texts). Whether you agree with things or not, removing acknowledgement that they even exist isn't exactly conducive to critical thinking. I think historically you may have captured the educational model, but Yim has hit on how the educational system is being manipulated and steered for a desired result. It's a legit criticism and a disturbing trend if it is actually carried through to fruition.
  22. The great irony of course is that spending a casual day together without worrying about time, etc. is more correlated to traditional Thai/Buddhist values. The whole idea of ST and maximizing the money you receive while doing as little as possible - and looking to exploit opportunities for the most money - those are Western values that have been internalized by the Thais. They learned that from Western influence. Like I say - crazy mixed-up world sir.
  23. It's a good topic because it's one of those where there is something to it but impossible to answer. What's the balance between caring about how you look vs not giving a shit and letting yourself go vs an annoying obsession with it -- and a proclivity to photograph yourself hundreds of times a day. I feel sorry for some of these chiquitas when I see them taking - literally - hundreds of selfies and then spending a ridiculous amount of time pouring over them to decide which they like. Rinse and repeat, over and over. GAH!!! It's a crazy and mixed up world.
