Steve - I lived in Kenya a few years back, safety is a bit confusing, the city is modern, very clean (No Smoking anywhere in city) good restaurants, BUT there is an underside of danger. The wildlife is a must, Even a short trip to Lake Naivasha is amazing, literally millions of Flamingo's. The "Big 4" are easy to find, no lions at Naivasha though. Nairobi is also quite high and cool. Don't expect hot weather. I personally prefer the colour of west Africa to East Africa, Ghana is a favourite of mine.
