OraQuick HIV Test Kits

short-time

Recommended Posts

About two months back there was a thread here where someone mentioned a clinic near Patpong where the 20 minute OraQuick HIV-1/2 self test kits could be purchased.

Well, the directions to the place were a bit confusing to me, so I failed to find it on my first attempt. But I'm a determined SOB, so I enlisted the help of a couple of veteran BKK buddies who really know their way around and we found the place during a run to the 'pong with no problem.

Here's the easy way to find the Surawong Medical Center. Walk out of Pink Panther on PP2 and turn right. Continue down PP2 maybe 100 feet to the first soi then turn right. The clinic is less than 50 feet down this soi on the right hand side. You can't miss it.

As was reported; the test kits go for 500B each or five for 2000B. Against my better judgment (because the expiration date was Feb. 03), I opted for five. (BTW, they also stock Viagra, and Uprima - which I have never seen for sale anywhere else. Couldn't resist trying this stuff, so I purchased one Uprima tablet for 550B - I'll write a separate post on what I thought of it.)

Anyway, these OraQuick tests are really cool. They look somewhat like an oral digital thermometer with a swatch at the end you swipe your gums with. Following this, you stand the thing up in a vial of developing solution and wait 20 - 40 minutes. That's all there is to it.

If you are negative one control line forms in a window, but (god forbid) if you are HIV+ a second line below the control will appear. The reliability of this test according to the included information is extremely high. Even higher accuracy (a gnat's ass from 100 %) can be obtained if a blood sample is used instead of saliva.

I tried one on myself and one on my TGF (both results were negative :)). I attempted to test another lady I have repeatedly been with, but she stubbornly refused. This is not surprising; I doubt many bargirls would easily submit to this unusual request.

Interesting comments? I thought flames and name calling were not allowed on this board? Really, did you get up on the wrong side of the bed or do you make a living counseling and feel you may lose a buck here? I agree there are nut cases on this board and based on your writing - fear YOU may be one of them. Anyway, I have a hard time with your flip-out scenario.

Whatever the case, I did not reveal the test results to the lady I tested and would have done the same with the other girl. Not sure how I would have handled a positive result though. Probably would have just suggested the lady see a doctor.

I certainly would not have put it in her face and am sure I have a better bedside manner than you do.

Reckon this product is not for everyone, but thought the info might be of interest to other members. Guess if you are suicidal or the type of person who prefers to stick their head in the sand it's not for you.

Intend to pick up some of these on my next visit. I know this orasure testing is a controversial subject for many though I cannot really understand why. It is always good to know your status. Those who argue against that seem to me as if they prefer not to know for reasons best known to themselves. So, if the lady agrees, no problem. If you get a positive there are ways too handle it cooly. Thanks for an informative post. Cheers, Run :)

Short-time,

thanks for the report which I found interesting. I do not understand the reaction of keith doug which I find very extreme. There is nothing wrong with a quick testing if the girl agrees. I also agree with Runkarna?s statement that those who argue against it do this without any valid reason. What?s the difference if somebody who?s HIV+ learns about it within an hour or has to wait for several months to receive the results. The fact remains the same, he or she is HIV+. Imho it?s better to know the facts immediately than to wait with uncertainty for a long period of time. In case such a quick test reveals that a person is HIV+ , he/she has to see a doctor anyhow. The argument not to do this quick testing because the girl could go totally mad is somehow shallow.
