Guest
Well I guess I'm one of your half pats. The guys that I work with in the same situation as me get between $35 to $50 an hour, works out atabout 350,000 + Baht per month. Local hire with no allowances or airfares, medical etc. and there's a lot of us about. Company bods that come over from Stateside are picking up between $30,000 and $50,000 per month. Yes that's US$ per month, not baht!!

gobbledonk
Is it just me, or has it become the norm to inflate one's salary ? Working in a semi-government organisation does cut a lot of this bullshit - if you know what position a colleague has, you have a pretty reliable idea of their salary. Back in private enterprise, it was hilarious to hear the sort of figures being bandied around, but less hilarious to see the acrimony that it caused. Lets keep it real, homies ::

Spot on artie, this is a particular big thing in my business too (export/wholesale meat bus.) and hilarious watching the consequences of jealousy... Yes that's US$ per month, not baht!! I know of one guy (expat) who is on 30K US$ per month but it's in Tokyo. Housing and everything included. Pretty high managing position. To put it in a perspective, 30K is 12 times what English teachers earn here, foreigners or Japanese. And about 40% more than what president of Toyota gets. To have that much in BKK seems to me unrealistic, let alone 50K.

I know quite a few American expats and visitors to Thailand and never heard of anyone making that kind of money. Not saying it doesn't happen, but that is some big money. Even if that was the total compensation package and not just salary, that is some major dough. You are right in that at my 'company' too it all depends on whether you were brought in to work or are a local hire.
Guest
Not inflating mine or anyone elses, I've seen the cost accounting and was shocked at the amounts that these guys earn. When your in the powergen and petrochem game and shutdowns mean losses of revenue of $ millions per day a few $$$$ here and there on salaries is peanuts. And don't forget these poor sods have to pay taxes back home!!!
gobbledonk
And don't forget these poor sods have to pay taxes back home!!! Your Lordship, My heart bleeds for these poor devils Seriously, I used to resent the fact that the Oz government was taking half of my income above a certain figure, but I've since come to realise that 50% of something is much better than 100% of nothing (I swapped money for greater job security and a more laidback job). The other thing about earning the big bucks is that it enables one to employ creative accountants, engage in some worthwhile salary sacrifice schemes and so on. I would be surprised if Uncle Sam gets more than 25% of what he would normally expect from such high rollers.

And I have a hard time believing that the salary mentioned is close to possibility. :: Now, please tell, what career fields have this salaray range in Thailand? Jasmine I believe these types of jobs tend to be specialist field engineers working shutdowns/start-ups in large Petro Chem or Power stations. If you make $100 an hour and work 100 hours a week, it's not hard to make to make that kind of money. Problem is, usually the jobs don't last but a couple months at most.
