THe hammer has fallen on nightlife

Very good points. I don't think the Thai govrenment is sophisticated enough to collect good deographic information and spending patterns to understand who their valuable tourists really are. For example, no one has discussed gay men. These guys are one of the highest spending groups and most desirable demographics in developing countries. GAy men, like hetro sanukers are big spenders and, I suspect, totally unknown/unrecognized by the TAT.

I have read all these posts and must admit that a frank discussion is in order and all posters should be commended for their varied opinions. That being said, I think that everyone is missing a central point that was made by Deep Throat of Watergate fame. JUST FOLLOW THE MONEY.

There was no need for a new airport. The Thai Air Force was practically begging the government to take over their side and thus enlarge the current airport and get them the hell out of Bangkok. But if that happened then no one would get rich off of building "Cobra Swamp".

The entertainment zones were picked exactly to enrich those who owned property in them and everyone else can just suck eggs.

How can anyone justify Patpong as being a legitimate "entertainment area" when one considers the number of schools located in that area.

The bottom line is that all of these changes are and are going to be governed by who can make the most money as a result of these changes. And the social order campaign is just a cover for the shifting of wealth from one area to another. ::

I agree. The Constitution is getting laughed off and people are lining their pockets. Newspapers are complaining about it, and democracy in Thailand is turning out much like it exists in most of the countries that are "veterans of the system" ::

A few people are going to be screwed hardcore by the zoning. Especially certain bar-owners, but its hardly going to cripple the country economically, or make many ripples.

The result of the whole affair in my mind will be the economic equivalent of: eating dinner and having a sour burp after.. :dunno:

The Malaysian have the most tourist visiting Thailand per/year, everyday, from Malaysia to Hatya is about 10000/day, Thailand have 12 million tourists, about 1/4 is from Malaysia. also Singapore, from singapore , that have 20+ flight aday. You can see all the Malaysia tourist in Hatya, also the border town.(with casino and gogobar). for Singaporean, You can easy find them at the big massage hse and high end KTV lounge. they anytime out spending the west, for sure.

Are you saying that there are 20+ flights a day from Singapore to Thailand? Not counting connections, I find that hard to believe. Care to provide more details?

"they anytime out spending the west, for sure. "

From my own personal experience with Singaporeans, they are the cheapest people on the planet. Just because they go to KTV's doesn't mean they outspend western tourists.

And regarding Malaysians as stats, I can believe there are a lot of "arrivals" becuase they border Thailand. But, one-day trips for boozing isn't the equivalent of 7-10 stays in 4-5 resorts.

The Ministry of Tourism monitors boarding crossing stats for tourism, but if questioned will readily admit, as will border officials that the numbers are unreliable information. Especially considering how dodgy some of the crossings are about keeping tally, with traders and the odd locals moving around day-in-and-day-out in the North and Eastern parts of the country.

Don Muang international arrivals, length of stay, number of return trips, and average amount spent are all numbers that are watched the most carefully by the TAT. Sure they care about the other stuff, but that's the primary international port of entry for most foreigners entering Thailand save those who have adjacent land borders.

20 flights from Singapore a day? Even if you count the Air Asia hops that's hard to believe... maybe.

Back to Nightlife though.. or what's left of it. Hat Yai is the party town for those fellas from Silly-pore? I've never hit that spot in the South. Doubt I will to be honest, but interesting to know.

Best,
