BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thai police have arrested a 56-year-old American teacher after 500 photographs of naked teenagers were allegedly found during a raid of his Bangkok apartment, police said on Tuesday. Police said the man, who they named as Steven Erik Prowler, had lived in Thailand for six years and taught English at a government school in Bangkok. "During the raid, we found two teenagers who said they just had oral sex with him," Colonel Surat Udomrat told Reuters. The two were aged 15 and 17, police said. In the apartment police said they found 500 postcard-sized photos of naked male teenagers, mostly Thais aged between 11 and 17. They also found journals detailing his alleged sexual exploits. Police said they planned to file charges of sexually abusing underaged youths against the man later this week. "Although the maximum penalty is 10 years in jail for each count, he has repeated his crime with hundreds of victims and these crimes would add up," Lt. Colonel Dhamnoon Munkong said. Police said Steven Erik Prowler, 56, told them that the two boys, who are 15 and 16 years old, had sex with him willingly after meeting him three years ago. Pol Colonel Suras Udomrat, commander of the children welfare division, said Prowler, an English teacher at Ramkhamhaeng University?s Demonstration School, was charged with buying sex from underage children, illegal detention of minors and molesting children aged under 18. Acting on tip-offs from Prowler?s neighbours, Suras led an early morning raid on the American?s rented apartment on Soi Ramkhamhaeng 8 in Bang Kapi district. Police found Prowler inside the room with the two boys. The two boys told police that they met Prowler three years ago and came to sleep with him at the apartment now and then. They said Prowler paid them Bt250 each every time they had sex with him. Police seized a photo album with nude pictures of more than 100 boys and an album containing pubic hair and signatures, which Suras said Prowler had kept as a souvenir after having sex with boys. Suras said he suspected Prowler might have kept photos of boys because he acted as their sex-service agent and might have downloaded the pictures onto the Internet. Police are investigating that possibility, he said. Unfortuanately, BKK, pattaya, and other main falang hangouts and not falang hanglouts in LOS probably breed these type of characters or at least attracts them to come here.. What is it? Does one need to focus on supply or demand to stem the tide? Hey, how many are with you in any given time as you sit on your favorite bar stool? A scary thought.. Hey, we are not policemen; that is someone else's problem. We are only temporary residents and normal sex tourists. Normal sex tourists? Got to think about that one... Steve Posted May 17, 2005 Report Share Posted May 17, 2005 Drudge is known mainly for political exposes here in the states. 250 baht is a lot of money to these boys so that's added incentive. This stuff goes in the west. Its all a matter of opportunity and situations that lend themselves to this kind of thing happening and unfortunately it will always happen in today's world. All we and the authorities can do is be vigilent. The other thing is that its English teachers and this may stain the profession and the many falang teachers in LOS. Its already assumed by a lot of our countrymen that going to LOS means you are going for underage sex, now if you teach english you may be assumed to be there for underage sex as well. whosyourdaddy Posted May 17, 2005 Report Share Posted May 17, 2005 Yep, the entire industry and economy will have to change to rid thailand of sex tourism. The guy has really damaged farang teachers. He was at one of the most respected goverment schools and was there for a long time. Thailand is trying hard to weed the sex tourists out of the teachers industry and all teachers WILL have to be qualified in the next 3 years my sources at the M.O.E tell me.
