1876 -- Samuel Tilden was elected prez, but Republicans in Congress challenged the electoral votes of the southern states still under reconstruction rule -- and gave all of those votes instead to Rutherford B. Hayes (by a "majority" of 1).

Grover Cleveland ran for prez three times and got the popular vote all three times, but lost the second one. He's the only prez with a broken term. (I think this was the only real eff up in the Electoral College. The other "minority vote" prezes are all open to the question of "fiddling".)

Things would be much more fun, if the govmt hadn't changed the rules. The way the country started out, the top electoral vote getter became prez and the number two man became the veep. Wouldn't things be much more interesting if we had President Bush with Vice President Gore? President Bush with Vice President Kerry?

:o

p.s. Fascinating how the Democrats try to fob the VN War off on Nixon, when it was JFK and LBJ who really got the US stuck into it. (I'm waiting for the Anarchist Party to organise so I can join it.)

Did'nt JFK sign an order to start bringing troops home shortly before he was killed?

If I recall, JFK, considerd Lao to be a bigger threat than Vietnam, and also got a lot of that going. When did we first send advisors to Lao/Vietnam...officially I mean, in the 50's?

Flasher, thanks for the info on the elections. As I said before, I'll conceede that Bush cheated better than Gore and Kerry...I think they are all dirty of it to an extent...

Hi!

I recently read an article about Eisenhauer not wanting to invade Vietnam as it was a war that couldn't be won (it was won by the Vienamese). JFK also initiated the Cuba crisis which recent historians think is the closest to a nuclear holocast the world has ever come to. Incidentally JFK is probabaly the most revered US president up to date in Europe but I wonder how many Europenas are aware of how close to total destruction he brought us. We are all alive today because N. Chrustjev was not as fanatic as JFK.

regards

The man's a CUNT.

He is certainly a clever cunt, managed to nick the conservative party policies while they were looking in the other direction, and better still, unless the lefty socialists give them back, I doubt the fuckers will ever get elected again.

"...We are all alive today because N. Chrustjev was not as fanatic as JFK..."

Keep in mind, N Kruschev was a Fanatic, who played a major role in this mess. JFK, it could be argued played hard ball with a fanatic, and backed him down thus making the world safer, and we are all alive because he didn't allow a nut job to push us around...2 ways or more to look at any situation. What I never understood was how we could say it was ok for us to have missiles in USSR's back yard, but they couldn't have thm in ours...pretty fucking hypocritical if you ask me...

That crap said, I did read, that part of Truman's decision to drop the bombs on Japan (which they would have used had they had them same same Germans) was to show an Emerging USSR that we had them, and ment business, and would use them...thus initiating a need for USSR to get them, thus the arms race/build up...
