bust
Anyone got any ideas how this will effect a APEC cardholder?
Flashermac
<< The move will affect tens of thousands of visitors from 41 countries who have been allowed to stay in Thailand for up to 30 days without a visa - often for many months or years. >> Bovine defecation! Nobody is allowed to stay WITHOUT A VISA!
Flashermac
<< And there is this guy who got a retirement visa 5 years ago and went home to visit family to find out his visa was void when he re-entered Thailand. >> Obviously, he neglected to get a re-entry permit! Even if you have permanent residency here, you will lose it if you don't go out with a re-entry permit. Can you name any other country with that kind of "logic"? We had a fellow decide to take his wife on holiday a few years ago ... without even thinking of what would happen when he left. The immigration official at the airport looked at him and said, "Archan, what are you doing?" Too late to cancel his trip, so he lost his non-immig visa AND his WP. He had to come back on a tourist visa and do it all over again. The Thai at the university who helps us with visas and WPs stared at the offender, saying in Thai ... "Why did you do this to me???" limbo
Fully agree Mac, that's one of the most non ideas there are regarding the visas. No logic at all in this, just another way of making a few bucks.
Old Hippie
I can see a fee for the 30 day tourist visa comming at some point. Rational being "everyone else does it..."
ChristianTroy
It is not going to happen! The result will be that you can still enter the country as many times as you want as long as you will re-enter from your home country! People who use the visa runs to re-enter thailand will have to get a visa as mentionend in the article! Thai authorities are not so stupid as they pretend to be! If every tourist has to apply for a Visa then this country will die! There are also agreements with the other countries which wouldn't let them do it! The staff at the Thai embassies couldn't handle the requests anymore, they would need more embassies in other countries and they wouldn't allow them to do that! Think before you moan! They are just trying to scare people again, nothing will change as long as you are no visa runner!
ChristianTroy
One more thing now since they have the shiny new airport where especially Thai Airways has invested billions, do you really think that a company like Thai Airways would let them fuck up their business? Many of the frequent visitors enter the country 5 to 8 times a year and stay 3 weeks! Many have a condo, many others have a house, what do you think would happen to the real estate market, to the airlines and the entire hotel industry? They Big Bosses in these industries would behead them personally if crap like that would happen! The economy would loose Zillions, they are not so stupid to do that! It won't happen! Old Hippie
I tend to think you are right, in some regards. This could all end being nothing for the average/frequent tourist such as myself.
Pescator
I think half of the problem is the farangs who work under the table and pay no taxes that are the root of the problem. As the article mentioned, some of these people are criminals who have fled from their home countries and have taken up residence and work in Thailand. I am not sure that the implementation of stricter visa rules are in particular aimed at farangs. Plenty of others living and working in LOS without proper work permit and visa. Indians, Pakistanis, chinese, nigerians and citizens from the neighbouring countries. cheers hn

From your home country? They way I read it, nothing stands in your way from obtaining a visa prior to entry from a thai embassy in say Malaysia? Sure beats going to the US in terms of time and money and for that very reason. cheers hn
