OH, yes i was'nt refering to all our colonial cousins :) But you know the section i mean. But it does sometimes rub us up the wrong way a bit when we hear the US government go on about the war on terror when it was only in recent years that they decided to clamp down on IRA fund raising and weapons procurement.

Its hard to read the usual British gibberish about Ireland.

Do yourselves a favour guys ...read a history book.

Remember there are two histories....that of the oppressor and that of the oppressed.

Try leaving The Dog's Bullox and talking candidly to one of your ex subjects.

<< the indigenous Irish have been subject to brutal foreign imperialism for near 1000 years now. >>

Ah, yes .. pity the poor Firbolgs and the Tuatha de Danan. :(

p.s. Two of my maternal ggg grandparents were Famine immigrants from Co. Tyrone. Still, I never call myself Irish. That would be ridiculous. (Most of my paternal ancestors were Ulster Scots, but I'm not about to join the Orange Order either!)

Sinsin2, what gibberish? I'm talking about recent history, 30 years not what Oliver Cromwell did nearly 400 years ago, or What King Leopold of the Belgians did in the Congo or how the Americans treated the Native Americans or Spains activities in Central and South America etc etc etc. At the height of the "troubles" in the 1970s the majority of the population of Northern Ireland wanted to remain in the United Kingdom. The republican movement wanted to circumvent the democratic process and line their pockets with gangster tactics protection rackets and drug dealing etc at the same time. (As did the loyalist paramilitaries of course) I suggest you get that big chip off your shoulder and start living in the 21st century and don't try and justify uncivilised behaviour because of things that occured in the distant past.

Well, I wasn't going to post to this thread again .. but I see the need to, due to confusion over colonial effects in the area of Thailand / Siam south of the Isthmus of Kra.

This area is where the irked separtists are raising cain.

This area became part of Siam based on the Anglo Siamese Treaty of 1909.

The Malays were not represented.

The northern Malay region (south of the Isthmus of Kra) was cut into 2 pieces by the colonalist .. & the northern area given to Siam ..

This 1909 agreement partially superceded the Burney Agreement of 1826 .. which was signed during the period of the 3 Anglo-Burmese Wars & assigned SE Asian territory to Anglo control.

The anglo goal was to control the coast of the Indian Ocean from Africa to Singapore & the Strait of Malacca remains critical until today..

Significant that none of these Anglo wars occured in Anglo land .. seems those hooligan Anglos were war mongering all over the globe.

The Burney Agreement protected Siam from the brutal Anglo Colonialism .. colonial hegemony that has resulted in the terrible state of affairs in Myanamar today.

Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar & Pattini are all the result of colonialism. Thailand is surrounded by failed colonialist dreams.

The Hat Yai / Pattini separtist movement is the direct result of the 1909 Colonial decree that split the northern Malay between the 2 countries.

The current Pattani separatist movement is due to Pattani's refusal to recognize the validity of the Anglo decree of 1909.

as I understand it, Thai is not the primary language of the separtist.

During this period there was extreme competion between european colonialist for global empire .. this is when lovable 'ol Leopold was creating major irk in the Congo.

global empire = asset theft via military action / mass murder.

Siam had been at war with French Indo China earlier in the 20th century .. franco siamese war.... when Siem Rep became part of French Cambodia ..

Anglo maps pre 1900 clearly show Siem Rep to be in Siam .. although, it does represent Khmen design ..

There were demonstrations / stoning of the Thai Embassy in Phenom Phen in '99 after a Thai actor contended that Angkor Wat should be in Thailand.

never been there.. never took a class .. just internet reading.

maybe a true historian can add to this.

>>I'm talking about recent history, 30 years not what Oliver Cromwell did nearly 400 years ago<<

problem is that in other areas mythical lore 1000s of years old is being used to justify brutal domination of the indigenous people.

can we choose which history applies to each region?

This historical time frame here & that historical time frame there..

what's good for the goose is good for .. & all that.

my 'will' returns the land I live on (+ my bank savings .. an IRA!, :-) )to the Indian Tribe with a reservation / casino nearest to here ..

'course my goal is to have depleted as many of my assets as possible when the dirt hits my face ..
