Nine-year-old Thai girl critically wounded in LA gang crossfire

Los Angeles - A 9-year-old girl Thai standing in her kitchen was shot in the head by a stray bullet as two gangs exchanged gunfire across the street, according to Associated Press Friday.

Charupa Wongwistiri was hospitalized in critical condition following the Wednesday night shooting in the Angelino Heights neighborhood west of downtown, Officer Jason Lee said.

Wongwistiri was standing next to her mother in the family's kitchen when outside, someone in a car pulled up to a group of men on the street and opened fire. The men then returned gunfire, and one of the bullets struck Wongwistiri.

AP reported that Wongwistiri and her family came to the United States from Thailand about a year ago seeking a better life, her mother told reporters in Thai.

"She now feels this was a mistake," said Officer Pete Phermsangngan, who translated for the mother. "She said in two days Christmas is coming, New Year's is coming and she doesn't have any future."

No other injuries were reported, and no arrests have been made. Police were searching for Cesar Zamora, 24, who was named a person of interest in the investigation.

This is so sad ,

The punk mexician gangbangers were shooting at each other and a stray bullet went thru a window , then a wall and hit the girl in the head :(

The mother was on TV last night , there was a Thai LAPD officer translating for her.

I hope the little girl the best.....

I am sure there is probably not a green card in the bunch either...tell all this to the people who say open the boarders, and have free immigration, after all, these people "*ONLY* want a better life and take jobs no American wants." Time to play cowboys and illeagal Mexicans.

Are you so sure? The recent inditements of what 7 guys including officers in the civilian killings still says they have a way to go.....

I found the mother's statement about Christmas a little weird to make considering she has been in the country a year unless she is of course Christian. Maybe an example how fast the american culture of influence and indoctrination take place?

Really can't blame any ethnic group for what took place. More a reflection of our american culture, socio-econ status, educational system, and times/era whether minority or in the case of Los Angeles majority....

If she lives, the health care she will be superior to what she would have gotten back home. As a matter of fact, that she is still alive is probably a reflection of the emergency care she has already received. And then comes the medical bills which is so problematic in our current health care delivery system...

Have you seen that US Army recruitment commercial where the father tells the army son that he just noticed that the kid shook his hand and looked at him straight in the eye for the first time? And then the father says, "Where'd' that come from?"

The kid looks like a fucking tweaker!

Seems that, in terms of recruitment, they're scraping the bottom of the barrel now!

Has it ever been any different? Okay lets put aside the two world wars where there was a sense of purpose and everone rallied around the flag pole rich or poor..

But in voluntary and involuntary times, the military is a viable option of many who would be a liability in civilain life. It gives them some hope, a chance to acquire some skills, a chance to mature and trying to figure things out.

It also gives them a higher degree of probaility of being killed or injuried in the process. Maybe even a drug problem or an occupational illness....

P.S. This post does not refer to officers. For the most part, a group of indiviuals who actually could have done well in other fields or endeavers....
