Why has this got to start in a nice place like Thailand, lots of family's will now cancel their Holidays. People I know now go to Thailand because Bali is out for them because of the bombings.

January 1, 2007 - 1:06AM

At least six bomb blasts rocked the Thai capital Bangkok on New Year's Eve, killing at least two people and injuring 12, police said.

The culprits and motive were unknown.

The bombings in several parts of the city capped a year of unrest in Thailand, including a military coup three months ago and a mounting Muslim insurgency in the far south.

National police chief General Ajirawit Suphanaphesat said on the iTV television network there were six blasts, and authorities were inspecting several more locations where suspicious packages were found.

Police Lieutenant General Chongrak Juranond said one person died at Chulalongkorn hospital. Another police officer, Lieutenant Colonel Teerawit Butsaban, said a second person succumbed to injuries at another hospital.

The iTV report said at least a dozen other people were injured.

Ajirawit said six people were injured by a bomb in the slum area of Klong Toey, and four by a bomb near a department store at Victory Monument, which is in a major traffic circle.

He said other explosions were near a police post in the Saphan Kwai district, where two were injured, and in Kae Lai district in a northern suburb of Bangkok.

There was no immediate word on the attackers' identities or possible motive.

The police chief said ``the situation remains under control'', but cautioned those out celebrating to exercise caution and to notify police immediately if they find suspicious objects.

Bombings and shootings occur almost daily in Thailand's three southernmost provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani, where an Islamic insurgency that flared in January 2004 has killed more than 1,900 people.

The insurgents are not known to have launched any attacks in Bangkok, and Ajirawit said the insurgents were probably not behind today's attacks.

Muslims make up the majority in overwhelmingly Buddhist Thailand's deep south, where they have long complained of discrimination.

Thailand has also been immersed in political turmoil.

In September, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was ousted in a bloodless coup by General Sondhi Boonyaratkalin.

The military installed Surayud Chulanont as the interim prime minister until elections in October 2007.

There is an unsubstantiated report that one bomb went off near the Landmark on the Suk-

Not 100% sure on this one fellas heard it from a guy who spoke to his GF who works near there.Could be BS...

It seems they kept the bombing well on into the night with a variety of locations and techniques. Have NOT been able to speak with my friend in the anti-terrorism squad-his wife said he is busy...

''Why has this got to start in a nice place like Thailand, lots of family's will now cancel their Holidays. People I know now go to Thailand because Bali is out for them because of the bombings.'

Firstly it needs to be said, Thailand is not such a nice place anymore. Its had insurgency growing out of its control in the south for the last few years, corruption is rampant, the police out of control, it recently deposed a tyrant of a PM and replaced him with a bunch of amateurs who are playing at being the goverment like 6th form society debators or accountants.

There is also a anti-foreigner mood around with Thai nationalism on the rise.

The longer term future of Thai Institutions and the figure head is far from clear.

Most of this goes on under the radar of most occaisional visitors to thailand as they rarely see or care about such matters, the bombs will scare them away for a while but the prospect of a major excercise in retribution is likely to do further damage.

Thailand is changing and not for the better.

Festivities off as bombs disrupt Bangkok; two dead, 25 injured

BANGKOK: -- Two persons have been killed and at least 25 injured as a series of bombs or hand grenades exploded in at least six areas in the Thai capital and neighbouring province on New Year's Eve, police said.

Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin cancelled the Thai capital's New Year's Eve countdown at the downtown Central World shopping complex.

At least six bombs exploded across the city in the early evening, leading to quickly intensified security on the two light rail systems, the MRT Skytrain and the MRTA subway, and cancellations of varied celebrations.

The first bomb went off about 6 pm near a bus shelter at the Victory Monument followed by another nearby bomb shortly after.

Initially Bangkok Deputy Governor Wallop Suwandee said five persons, including one woman, were injured. One died later in hospital.

Another bomb was detonated at a crowded Klong Toey market, injuring seven people, one of them a ten-year-old girl, and a 61-year-old man who later succumbed to injuries at hospital.

Another bomb went off at a traffic police post near busy Saphan Kwai-Skytrain overpass intersection injuring 17 people, two seriously. Police cordoned off the area for further investigation and a squad of 20 soldiers was dispatched to the scene to ensure no further untoward incident.

A fourth bomb went off at a police box on Sukhumvit Road Soi 62. No one was injured. A police traffic post near a major intersection in Nonthaburi province, north of Bangkok was also hit by a bomb but no casaulties were reported.

Another bomb went off in the compound of the Tesco Lotus superstore at Prachachuen, while another was planted in a waste bin at Seacon Square Shopping Mall, in eastern suburban Bangkok, but a bomb-disposal squad defused the device before it exploded.

There was no immediate word on the bombers' identities or possible motive, but Government Spokesman Yongyuth Mayalarp told a news conference that the incidents were apparently the work of ill-intentioned people who wished to create disturbances in the country. He also urged the public to remain calm and alert police immediately for any irregularities.

The explosions took place as Bangkokians are celebrating the upcoming New Year. It was not immediately clear if the bombs had anything to do with the military coup of September 19 that ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra, or with continuing insurgency violence in the Muslim-predominant southern border region which has left more than 1,900 people dead since 2004.

I seriously doubt Thaskin has anything to do with it. He's a fucking billionare and has nothing to gain from killing his own people.

Almost certain it's linked to the muslim insurgents in the south. It was just a matter of time before they came north, and now it appears to be happening.

It'll be interesting to contrast the word on the streets with how the media spins this story, seeing how the muslim world is their current darling.
