Why do they keep buffaloes?

He was spending his time boom booming the water buffalloes.

 

Next some Kiwi asks what's wrong in that? :cool:

 

Well there are some stories that the Samish people in the Lapland are also boom booming their reindeers :)

 

Well no actually, us Kiwis would ask, "is it OK to put makeup on them?"

My ex GF's dad used the buffalo to plough, although that was in 2001, don't know if he still does. But it is seen by many as a good pratice. the animal adds manure to the field, and also the weight on its hooves is supposed to cause deeper penetration into the soil, which makes for better soil preparation. Mechanical buffaloes (used to?) cost more on debt as well as maintenance and fuel.

 

I have eaten buffaloes, especially at weddings, where the buffalo head is publicly displayed, prior to it being stripped, cooked and eaten.

 

The buffalo traditionally was an important farm tool, crucial to survival. Even if less used now, I can imagine many families find it hard to let go. I kind of like them.
