BANGKOK (Reuters) - The international community's "patience is running out" with military-ruled Myanmar and foot-dragging over its moves towards democracy, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said on Monday.

"I hope the Myanmar authorities will take it very seriously," Ban said during a visit to Thailand, where he urged the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), of which the former Burma is a member, to play a "special political role."

Time for a Chinese veto?

Interestingly I received this email today.

Dear Friends of Mae Tao Clinic,

We are writing to give you an early alert and at the same time ask for your help. 2009 promises to be a significant year for Mae Tao Clinic. In 2009 we will mark the 20th anniversary of the founding of Mae Tao Clinic. From its humble beginnings in 1989 as a stopgap medical relief station for people displaced during the 1988 uprising to its present role as both a major provider of medical care and as a key community organization for the people of Burma affected by the conflict in their land, the clinic has come a long way.

Coincidentally, in the same year, on December 6, Dr Cynthia will celebrate her 50th birthday. So 2009 will have two auspicious occasions that mark decades of collaboration and achievements and twice the opportunity to celebrate.

We plan to commemorate these past twenty years by producing a publication that recounts the many achievements and challenges from 1989 to 2009 and, at the same time, acknowledge the critical roles of so many individuals who have helped the clinic in one way or another respond to the crisis situation along the Thai-Burma border. Our hope is that this commemoration can in some small way pay homage to the thousands of brave men and women who have worked and supported the clinic and highlight the many roles that Mae Tao Clinic currently plays in the Thai Burma Border community.

To make this successful we need your help. Please send us your favorite photographs, video footage, documents, memories, stories or any other item about the Mae Tao Clinic that has stayed with you. Anything to do with the work or the people of the clinic, the school, the boarding houses, or any outreach work either in Burma or Thailand is material for this publication. Everything collected will be the basis for the 20th anniversary publication. And if we cannot fit it all in one publication, we will preserve all the documents and seek to circulate them in the best way possible. The growth of the Mae Tao Clinic is unique. It deserves to be documented in the same collaborative, sharing manner in which the clinic itself developed. You can help make it as complete as possible.

Please include as much detail as possible: names, dates, locations, etc with anything that you send, so that we can better organize the contributions in a meaningful way. We welcome your ideas for other ways to mark these 20 years of achievement.

Please post, fax or email your piece of the Mae Tao Clinic and send it to Lisa (English language) or Linn Kyaw (Burmese, Karen or other languages)

As the year goes on, we will keep you updated on events and other plans for the clinicâ??s anniversary.

With best regards,

Dr Cynthia Maung, Lisa and Linn Kyaw

If anyone has anything they want to contribute just let me know and I will forward you the details.
