Free health care for all?

HH, got a question. I assume you'd scrap everything: medicaid, medicare, etc. Basically take a more libertarian view that the free market will remedy all that and if people had to fend for themselves they would plan and budget better.

Am I correct in that assumption?

Not agreeing or disagreeing per se just wanted to get the totality of your view. I am making the assumption based on the 'no free lunch' statement.

In a strange way, it would make the family unit stronger. I think the reason why the family unit is so strong in Thailand and other 3rd world countries is because there is largely no social safety net with regards to health care. You rely on your kids to take care of you in your old age. Your kids ARE medicare.

HH has already made his statement! "Socialism" is bad, except if it benefits him. Then it is OK. Shygye nailed it: if socialism were *really* bad to HH, he would have sourced new health insurance instead of going the gummint route!

Typical Republican. Fuck everyone else, only "I" count.

Cheers,

SD

Okay, the Thai360 forum will do what the government won't or can't do. We're going to solve the health care problem in the U.S.

I'm going to throw this out there. Some stuff I've said before. Feel free to add, delete or change, call the ideas nuts, whatever.

* The AMA (American Medical Association) keeps the number of doctors arbitrarily low low to keep wages high. The AMA has been against every advancement: HMOs, initially against Medicare because they thought it undermined them. They use scare tactics that less qualified doctors will be in the system if they change or if we allow foreing doctors to come. Fact is we've seen that superb health care can be had in developing countries and european doctors make far less than American ones but are just as qualified. Break the AMA Hegonomy on qualifying doctors. Medical students at public universities can get 'federally qualified' to practice medicine and dentistry.

(excerpts from wiki: Critics of the American Medical Association, including economist Milton Friedman, have asserted that the organization acts as a government-sanctioned[citation needed] guild and has attempted to increase physicians' wages and fees limit by influencing limitations on the supply of physicians and non-physician competition...For most of the twentieth century, the AMA opposed publicly-funded health care)

* Forgiveness of all or portion of loans to medical schools for working in certain areas after graduation. Each year is a percentage of the loan. Go to a facility that would take care of Bubba and his sister/wife in West Virginia or LaQuan and his baby mamas in north Philly and part of your loan is forgiven.

* The UN offer rewards for cures for certain maladies or vast improvements in medicine. For instance a cure for various types of cancer (Breast and prostate 100 billion for example). Cure for Aids the same. Just throwing numbers out but you get my drift.

The amount would substantially cover R&D the person or entity paid as well as a substantial profit. However the catch is the world gets the cure. Split the cost amongst all nations in proportion and its very cost effective.

* Have any comprehensive plan designed by a blue ribbon panel who would not be beholden to any group with a vestd interest other than the American people. Congress will have to agree to vote without changes up and down on it.

* Malpractice lawsuits and the spiraling cost of malpractice insurance. Tricky one. Everyone is against these huge payouts for seemingly innocuous things UNTIL it happens to you or a love one. Will limiting payouts increase the chances of bad care? Is it even right? Frankly, I don't have much of a clue. Limiting punitive damages is the only thing I can think but allow the chance for it to be reviewed or appealed if the judge or a panel deems it worthy.

Er...guys, I think HH explained that already. He doesn't want to take his Medicare, but his PRIVATE insurance company FORCES him to take it as a stipulation of his insurance policy contract. Many/all private healthcare insurance companies do this. In effect they tell you you have to let the government become your PRIMARY insurer once you are eligible and they then become your SECONDARY insurance; paying what the government does not cover with medicare (minus any co-pays and deductions of course).

So in fact our government also subsidizes the private healthcare insurance companies once you reach the age (65) that you will be MOST LIKELY to need to USE their insurance that you have been paying for all along!

It's bullshit, but for some reason they are legally allowed to do this and force you into using the government medicare as your primary healthcare insurer. Good deal for them, huh? Right when many of their customers reach the age when they will need (likely) the health care coverage service they provide one Uncle Sam gets to take up the majority of the costs for them. Such a deal.

Typical socialist/commie response. :barf:

I suspect you never heard this little addage: "You make your bed, you sleep in it."

I, for one, am not the slightest bit interested in working to feather my bed only to have some assholes come along and tell me I MUST take a good portion of those feathers and give them to somebody else to make their bed--Or to share my bed with a complete stranger who I have never met. Socialists like to think of themselves as compassionate and caring. I think of them as robbers of those who have taken responsibilities seriously and planned for their lives. They have seriously fucked up the U.S. for decades. Socialists are just plain robbers in so many ways that socialism should be a criminal offense. Let our "socialists"/commies all "thrive" in Russia, Cuba, or North Korea. :barf::barf::barf:

That sounds really nice there HH, but when the rubber meets the road, you are sucking off the gummint teat. You are on Medicare. You are using MY feathers to line your nest. You *could* find some private insurance and use that IF you really believed in what you say...

Cheers,
