kamui
Since the US is the country with the most prisoners world wide, I presume that this kind deaths happen quite often. Inmate Count in U.S. Dwarfs Other Nationsâ?? By ADAM LIPTAK Published: April 23, 2008 [color:red]The United States has less than 5 percent of the worldâ??s population. But it has almost a quarter of the worldâ??s prisoners. Indeed, the United States leads the world in producing prisoners, a reflection of a relatively recent and now entirely distinctive American approach to crime and punishment. Americans are locked up for crimes â?? from writing bad checks to using drugs â?? that would rarely produce prison sentences in other countries. And in particular they are kept incarcerated far longer than prisoners in other nations. New York Times
Bangkoktraveler
Arresting people, incarcaration and/or probabition is big business in the USA. Lawyers, for the most part, write the laws, but it is lawyers who feed of the system that arrest, incarcarate and/or give people probabition. Flashermac
The US Congress is also extremely topheavy with lawyers. Don't expect Congress to change things.

Don't forget the GOP's privatized prisons need prisoners to generate income. So...more laws + more prisoners = more tax dollars to the GOP buddy boys. Flashermac
In Memoriam - Roxanna Maude Brown Brief obituary for esteemed UCLA alumna It is with deepest sadness that we mourn the untimely death on May 14, 2008 of UCLA Art History alumna Dr. Roxanna M. Brown, 62, world-renowned expert on SEA ceramics, curator of the Southeast Asian Ceramics Museum at Bangkok University and editor of their excellent newsletter. [color:red]She died in Seattle reportedly of an infection brought on by a perforated ulcer while in federal custody on a very dubious indictment. She had gone to Seattle to present a paper on SEA ceramics at a conference co-sponsored by UCLA and the University of Washington. The best coverage of the tragic circumstances surrounding her arrest and death is available from the website of the Seattle Times. Type the name "Roxanna Brown" into their search engine. A 2004 article about Roxanna's pathbreaking research on SEA trade ceramics is available on our website here. Roxanna's brother Fred Brown has posted a moving portrait of her early life as a reporter during the Vietnam War on YouTube. Anyone who would like to sign a condolence letter to Roxanna's family, or a petition calling for a full investigation into the circumstances of her death, or to contribute to a fund for her family's expenses related to her death, please contact Prof. Justin McDaniel at UC Riverside . Central Scrutinizer
Flash, I am really sorry to hear about this. The whole thing is a disgrace and was just so damned wrong and fool headed. She never should have spent one minute in custody with these dubious charges against her. All the feds needed to do was bring her/set a court date in front of a judge, ask to have her passport confiscated if they thought she was a flight risk, and let her have her day in court to prove her innocence, which is your right as an American. She was innocent until proven guilty, but treated shamelessly by these federal jackbooted numbskulls as though she was a proven criminal and some sort of threat to society. It's so goddamned disgusting. My sincerest condolences for her family. There was no need for this. A very sad story indeed. Cent
