Cellphone service

OK, it looks like I have to bite the bullet next trip and get a cellphone for use in Bangkok.

The phone should be a basic phone. I already own a very good camera; I don't need a so-so one. And what's involved in getting service set up?

Relevant issue: I'm only in town a few weeks out of the year.

Recommendations and suggestions?

Just walk into any 7 eleven and purchase a 12 call starterpack. Buy some credit in the same shop and bobs your uncle. Card should be valid for 12 months.

IF you already own a tri or quad band GSM phone AND it is unlocked, then just buy a SIM at 7-11, put it in, and voila!

If you need your phone unlocked, go to MBK (4th floor, I think) and ask for a shop that will unlock you phone. If you need to buy a phone, again go to MBK and look around. Lotsa cheap, basic phones on sale.

You can buy a 12call sim for 50 baht.

Really? Where?

The cost is usually B250 (can find a discount of B50 by shopping around, but really, if you need a $1.50, you shouldn't be in Thailand on vacation, should you?) for at "start-up kit," and that gets you B200 of credit and a 30 days validity. More credit and validity is available at the local 7-11 for anywhere from B100-300 (B500s are nearly impossible to find). More $$$ can be had at places like JayMart, where they do computer-generated cards vs the actual "scratch-off" cards from the 7 et al.

Cheers,

SD

If you have a Thai bank account, you can also add money to your prepaid phone account by ATM (in various amounts up to 800 Baht last time I tried). Paying by ATM may result in additional discounts than using the cards. With DTAC, afair, 800 baht paid via ATM yielded about 900 Baht worth of credit, plus 90 days of additional validity.
