He may have been elected by Democrats, but his policies were classic old school Republican (of which I could be one if they ever started acting like that again; Ike was the last good GOPer IMHO). He did some things...if I remember correctly, like getting the USA involved in SE Asia (VM, Laos, etc) with the "military adviser" role...and as the years went by, the USA got deeper and deeper into the situation.
