The government grants special visas that are eaten up by the tech companies here.

 

Given time to plan, these farmers with the help of the government could have special visas and import seasonal workers from latin america. Florida did it for years with caribbeans (Jamaicans, Trinidadians, etc.) to work the sugar cane crops and other crops in Florida for a season and then go home.

 

Given the present economy, I think there are plenty of Americans who would go there for the season.

 

Aren't those visas you mentioned the H1B and only for a certain class of "specialty occupations" which farm work does not qualify?

 

Anyway, suppose you have guest workers. Are they going to get health care with their job?

 

As you know, to save the USA from the evil socialist medicine, the employer pays for the working families health care (along with the employee)

 

You scenario sounds like a scheme for employers to get out of paying what other employers as a matter of course.

 

Anyway, time will tell if these jobs will be taken by a lot of Americans in this economy, and

I also think that those jobs may not be well advertised. Plenty of folks who are out of a job who may not otherwise do that kind of job may jump at the chance.

 

As far as health care, that can all be worked out. If they get hurt on the job they should be protected by OSHA standards like anyone else. The farmers could be exempt from paying for pre existing maladies. Maybe even get a check up prior, either in their home countries or on arrival.

 

Anyway, I think in bad times there would be plenty of Americans to do it. In good times I would expect a guest worker program to pick up the slack.

 

The counties where they are located as well as surrounding counties must also have some people on unemployement. Perhaps some of them may be used as well.

One of the palm trees is tall and skinny. None of the legals want to do it unless I pay them 4 - 5 times more then the illegals do. Where do I get the extra money and besides, the illegal picks of all the shit that falls to the ground and hauls it away. The legals want to charge me extra for that. The legals, I got to make an appointment with and it might take several weeks before they will do it whereas the illegals do it right then and there.

Aaah, you hit the heart of the matter. I don't ask for 10 billion pieces of documents to verify the person is legal or not. Even if they did show me some documents, I have no means to verify the documents are legal. Now if the government would allow me to verify who is legal or not legal (otherwards I become an employee) I would not mind verifying who is legal and who is not legal while I think of what I will do with my new retirement program. Shit, I don't work for free so why should the Feds expect me to work for free?

This is exactly the problem. It is so tempting to save money on illegal labor. We are now addicted to it.
