Somchai888
The rest of the group was very polite to me, smiled and laughed a lot but I was merely a curiosity for them or nonexistent. Is this supposed to be an indictment? It seems to be a universal description of how it is to hang out with people you don't know, especially with language and culture difference. I imagine if those Thai people suddenly joined you and your friends on a night out back in Farangland, they'd feel the same (or worse).
Sakai
I have no idea where you lived but every time I took someone for a night out with a group of my friends or colleagues this person has always been well taken care of. Same here where I took a Thai lady out for night out with a group of my colleagues (quite a few nationalities) and she was the treated as the main guest, although none of my colleagues ever met her before. In Thailand, each time I met some people I didn't know I always have been paid attention, asked questions because Thai people like to have fun and are usually curious. Was not the case there. YMMV
Faustian
Nice post Gadfly, although I must say the rich and powerful in the west also tend to act as if laws/rules are for the poor only...

It depend on which laws you try to bend in Germany. Those who commint financial crimes have much more leeway than acts of violence and other crimes. Those crimes usually don't go unpunished. And usually witnesses don't get killed like in LOS... Also virtually no one in Germany is able to bribe himself out of minor crimes like speeding or parking tickets. ThaiHome
You were doing ok until you strayed into the political part, which you still donâ??t seem to have a clue. On a macro-level, the dysfunctions you are seeing now in Thailand are being driven by a clash between the self anointed ones and the vast majority of Thais who are beginning to ask inconvenient questions, such as: "just who elected (anointed) you?" You really believe the dysfunctions are being driven by the vast majority of Thai questioning the anointed ones? I think you live in a different dimension. bibblies
Welcome to my world mate. Can't say anything more than what has been said (well done Sakai), other than a) solo ain't gonna cut it and if you are not with Thais, you're sunk (no matter how hansum or rich). So find a group of well employed, good looking, late-20-early-30-something Thai mates to escort ya or forget about it... Great... so now we've got the problem of having to find late 20-early-30-something Thai mates! So how do you approach a group of late 20 to early 30 something Thai prospective mates then? Gadfly
You really believe the dysfunctions are being driven by the vast majority of Thai questioning the anointed ones? Listen to the Thai radio in a taxi at night or, better yet, talk to a Thai taxi driver. Or look at the recent election results in the by-elections in Issan. Mr. T was horrible, but why do you think he remains so popular? So, I have to ask, since you are the "expert" here on all things Thai, what is causing the problems here? Or are you saying there are no problems?
Gadfly
Just go there with some Farang friends. I haven't been there and I suspect (but could easily be proven wrong) that your chances of connecting with an attractive Thai woman is very low, but what the hell, it would probably be fun for an hour so. If not, then I guess yer shit outta luck. Cheers, SD
TheCorinthian
It is interesting to me that when I go out with the Thai Ferrari Club, I do not get the above treatment. INstead, I tend to be treated like royalty from the US! It may be because of my membership in the club, which adds a certain status in their eyes, but it is also very obvious to me that no matter how wealthy I am, some of them are "out of sight" rich. I have gone to several meetings where I was the only Farang there. And I have also gone to others where I am sure I would never have gotten in to had I not been in their care.
