Lee Iacocca: I'm Backing Romney

Lee Iacocca, the man credited with saving Chrysler, has thrown his support to Mitt Romney in the Republican’s effort to unseat Barack Obama and take the reins of the country after the November election.

Iacocca, a lifelong Democrat who has been a war horse for numerous Democratic candidates in the past and who once turned down an appointment to the US. Senate, announced his decision to back Romney in an Op-Ed in Friday's Detroit News.

He praised Romney and said the country needs a president who can turnaround the economy with more than just words and promises.

“Mitt Romney has successfully led both public and private sector turnarounds,†Iacocca wrote. “He is a bright and successful man; he is a good man, a caring man, a man of integrity, family and faith. Importantly, he recognizes we are in a tough situation. With dozens of years of real world experience in the public and private sectors, he knows what he's talking about. His policies will enable a stronger America, one in which all Americans can share. He was groomed and trained for this moment.â€

Iacocca is now retired and living in California but his support is expected to help Romney in two key states: Michigan, where Iacocca spent most of his career, first at Ford and later at Chrysler, and Pennsylvnia. He was born and raised in Allentown. In 1991 Pennsylvania Governor Robert Casey asked Iacocca to take over the Senate seat of H. John Heinz III who had died in office. Iacocca declined the offer.

He rose to national prominence in 1979 when, after taking over the ailing Detroit car manufacturer, he received a bailout from Congress and rebuilt Chrysler. He later co-wrote a best-selling book, “Iacocca, An Autobiographyâ€.

In 2000 he backed George W. Bush, but switched to John Kerry in 2004.

Bailout?

<< Realizing that the company would go out of business if it did not receive a significant amount of money for a turnaround, Iacocca approached the United States Congress in 1979 and asked for a loan guarantee. While some have said that Congress lent Chrysler the money, the government only guaranteed the loans. Most observers thought this was an unprecedented move, but Iacocca pointed to the government's bailouts of the airline and railroad industries. He argued that there were more jobs at stake in Chrysler's possible demise. Iacocca received the loan guarantee from the government, whose decision caused controversy. >>

And the loans were repaid.

US election: Six crucial Senate races

Much of the world is focused on the US presidential election, as the long race winds into its final weeks. But the Republicans and Democrats are also engaged in another hugely significant contest on 6 November, one sprinkled with several colourful characters.

Control of the US Senate is up for grabs, says Jennifer Duffy, senior editor of the Cook Political Report.

"The Democrats could lose their majority, or if they don't, their majority is going to be pretty slim."

The Democrats currently hold a 53-47 majority in the upper house, the Senate, meaning the Republicans only need to win four more seats to take control.

The Republicans are expected to keep their hold on the lower house, the House of Representatives.

"A slew of swing state polls show the Midwest and Rust Belt tipping in Obama's direction, enough for FiveThirtyEight to peg Obama's chances of taking the White House at higher than 70 percent for the first time in 10 days.

As the campaign comes to a climax, perhaps voters are digging in their heels and finally making up their minds.

If things stay as they are right now, Obama wins. And if they keep moving in the same direction, Obama wins. Romney needs to do something to shake up the election again, and he needs to do it soon."

"The Real Clear Politics average of polls from Pennsylvania shows Barack Obama leading a full five percent over Mitt Romney, 49.7 percent to 44.7 percent. The most recent poll included in that average is a Quinnipiac survey showing Obama leading 50 percent to 46 percent. This survey has independents favoring Obama over Romney by a 50 percent to 43 percent margin, which appears to be the primary reason this survey shows a small Obama lead rather than the four percent Romney lead shown by the Susquehanna poll."

Presidential debate: Libya questioner says Obama didn’t answer

Al-Qaeda not behind Benghazi attack: report 20/10/12

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US intelligence agencies have found no evidence that last month's deadly attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya, was ordered by Al-Qaeda, according to The Los Angeles Times.

Citing unnamed US officials and witnesses, the newspaper said the attack, which killed ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans, was "carried out following a minimum amount of planning."

"The attackers exhibited a high degree of disorganization," the paper quotes one of the intelligence officials as saying.

"Some joined the attack in progress, some did not have weapons and others just seemed interested in looting."

According to another official cited by the paper, "There isn't any intelligence that the attackers pre-planned their assault days or weeks in advance."

Most of the evidence suggested that "the attackers launched their assault opportunistically" after learning about the violence at the US Embassy in Cairo, The Times quotes the official as saying.

Top Republicans have said President Barack Obama's administration is reluctant to acknowledge the incident was an act of terrorism for political reasons.

But after five weeks of investigation, US intelligence agencies say they have found no evidence of Al-Qaeda participation, The Times said.

Crikey, if it takes intelligence agencies 5 weeks to discover it wasn't a pre planned terrorist attack, it's a bit tough on Pres Obama to be criticized for failing to declare the source of the attack the same day. Obama called it "an act of terror" which it was, but didn't immediately point the finger at any organisation, because he simply didn't know and nor apparently did the intelligence agencies until 5 weeks later.

Whereas, Romney is inclined to shoot from the hip and think things through afterwards, which was Bushit's predilection too..resulting in the deaths of 1000s of allied soldiers' lives and millions of civilians'.

Who would you prefer as Commander-in-Chief: trigger happy chickenhawk Romney, who dodged the draft in Vietnam to save Mormon souls in France or sang froid Obama who actually delivered the goods eliminating Bin Liner and ending futile US involvement in Iraq and soon Afghanistan?

Willard Romney = John Wayne...he was a phoney too!

Secret Service 'Aware' of Threats Against Romney

Twitchy reports that "Post-presidential debate, Obama supporters renew vows to murder Mitt Romney." The threats are numerous--and explicit and graphic. Many call for Romney's murder or assassination.

The Secret Service confirms it is "aware" of the threats against Romney, a spokesman for the federal agency confirms.

"The Secret Service is aware of this and will conduct appropriate follow up if necessary," Brian Leary, a spokesman for the United States Secret Service, says in an email.

You mean like the umpteen death threats against Obama before and after he took office....from white supremacist nutters to plain disgruntled cracked Tea pots. The world is full of looneys of all political shades. It's disingenous to make political capital out of it.

But this dishonesty doesn't surprise me coming from a party who wants to use photo voter ID to disenfranchise millions of low income, aged, and disabled voters in order to stop the 10 cases of voter impersonation in 12 years amongst 146,000,000 registered voters. The only voter fraud is coming from Romney's cronies in Republican state governments...but then again 47% of US citizens (including veterans like you, Plasher) don't count to them anyway!

Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States, has been the target of several assassination threats and alleged plots since he first became a presidential candidate in 2007. Secret Service protection for Obama began after the Senator received a death threat in 2007, when Obama was still serving as then the junior U.S. Senator of Illinois and running for president. This marked the first time a candidate received such protection before being nominated.[1] Security was increased early for Barack Obama due to fears of possible assassination attempts by white supremacist or other racist groups or individuals against the first African American major party presidential nominee.[2][3][4]

Some of the threats have been extended to members of Obama's family, including First Lady Michelle Obama. Obama and his officials have generally declined to discuss death threats against him since entering the presidential race.[1][5] Some commentators have suggested the unusually high amount of death threats surrounding Obama are at least partially tied to the use of racist imagery and words used by some of Obama's critics to describe the president.[2]

The nuts and the fruitcakes don't need much to get pumped up.

Add to that the likes of Glen Beck et al and rhetoric that constantly and continually distorts the truth and reality.

Same holds true for some web sites and blogs. Some with just doom and gloom while others have a tinge of hate and racism.

And one cable news channel has the constant drone of all that is going "wrong" with the country. Day in day out.

It doesn't take much for the mentally challenged to go off the deep end.
