What I know from Suriname and our fishing trips there is that Piranha's are a very bony fish with barely any meat on them. They were only used as part of a fish soup. So if it was a tasty fish with lots of meat on it it probably wasn't a piranha :p

Well mystery solved...

 

I visited a government research fish farm and they knew all about it, there's another fish farm that is breeding them here and they are apparently sourced from China, though my money is on them being a variety of Pacu, originally from South America. The Lao name escapes me for the moment, but when I was at a market this morning there were some there, so photos and purchase were had. the fish is about 45 cm long, my billfold in the pic is 10cm long.
