People's Uprising About To Reach 'critical Mass'

What would happen in a western democracy if the majority in the legislature forced through a bill to grant amnesty to all those convicted of "political" crimes (including non-judicial killings) and prevent them and all others from being tried on any pending charges? Suppose that same parliamentary majority announced it would not recognise the judgment of the constitutional court since they did not agree with the decision?

Just wondering. :dunno:

p.s. Drunken millionaires' sons were not covered by the amnesty. They have to bribe their way out in the tried and true eastern fashion.

In the name of establishing eternal peace on the Thai360 board I hereby officially declare to refrain from further implementation of Western definitions concerning democracy etc into my future publication work . I declare that I have successfully been instructed by somebody who has been travelling into the country for 33 years that for example blocking the capital and disobeying of any laws that appear to be inconvenient in the process of ousting an elected government is in full accordance with Eastern definition of democratic culture .

I may ask aforementioned expert in Eastern culture if for example the killing of policemen by drunken Ferrari drivers should be considered as fully acceptable under Eastern definition or not under Western definition ? Or should we leave the definition of the standards to the local fortune teller ?

and yet again you mix it all up and now bring in corruption into the discussion...... :dunno: you do that on purpose or what ?

so, how about the killing of +/- 3000 people before proven guilty, all according to you concept of democracy ?

mai pen rai......

Be nice to Buffie. He lives in a civilised country and thinks that LOS is the same. It is ... and it isn't. Think of "Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There". He's still a good guy. In Thailand I'm not sure if there are that many good guys ... at least in politics.

Shutdown is illegal, govt warns :nono:

Government figures yesterday urged people not to join the "Bangkok shutdown" mass rally scheduled for January 13, warning that the protest was against the law. They also sought to discredit the movement - as the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) unveiled its plan for another march today.

PDRC spokesman Akanat Promphan said yesterday that the 7.5-kilometre march today would begin at 10am from Democracy Monument, where the anti-government protest has continued for more than two months.

He said the march this time would pass Phra Phuttha Yodfa Bridge, which is also known as Memorial Bridge, Pahurat (Bangkok's Little India), and roads on the Thon Buri side of the city.

There would also be similar marches on Tuesday and Thursday (Jan 7 and 9), the spokesman said.

He also called on the government's Centre for the Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO) to have measures that could prevent further violence against protesters. He said the PDRC protesters would not resort to violence.

Akanat said there had been repeated attempts to attack the PDRC after it managed to mobilise more and more people at its three previous mass rallies in November and December.

PDRC leaders yesterday had a meeting at an undisclosed location on Rajdamnoen Avenue to discuss their "Bangkok shutdown" plan, according to the spokesman.

Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Surapong Towichukchaikul, who is in charge of the KAPO, said yesterday the government appealed for people to think carefully on whether they should join the shutdown. He urged them not to support the PDRC's idea of occupying 20 major intersections in the capital, as part of a bid to force the caretaker Cabinet to resign en masse.

He said such an action would be in violation of the law and rights of other people, and it would bring severe negative impacts on the economy.

Surapong said the authorities were preparing "strong measures" to deal with the shutdown. :boxing:

Deputy spokesman for the ruling Pheu Thai Party, Anusorn Iamsaard said it was estimated that protests organised by the PDRC had caused more than Bt70 billion in damage to the Thai economy. A Bangkok shutdown could increase the damage to more than Bt200 billion, he said.*

On Friday night, anti-government protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban announced that the PDRC rally site at Democracy Monument on Rajdamnoen Avenue would be shut down on the day of "Bangkok Shutdown" on Jan 13.

He said new rally stages would instead be set up at 20 major intersections where mass demonstrations would be held all across Bangkok as part of a campaign to "seize" the capital.

"For those of you desiring to join us at Rajdamnoen on the day, please come no later than the evening of January 12. We are leaving Democracy Monument for good on January 13 for other grounds and not looking back," he said.

In a related development, Singapore Airlines said it would cancel 19 flights to Bangkok in the coming weeks as political tensions in the Thai capital were keeping some travellers away, according to The Straits Times.

Travel agents are also seeing fewer bookings as leisure travellers opt for less-troubled spots in Thailand like Phuket. The slowdown has even affected Bangkok's popularity as a destination for corporate travel, and meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (Mice) events, they said.

SIA, which flies five times a day to Bangkok, will cancel about one in 10 flights between Jan 14 and Feb 25. Affected customers will be put on other flights or given refunds if they cancel plans, a spokesman said.

*Still not much compared to the damage Pheu Thai has caused to the economy. :hmmm:

Suthep threatens to seize Yingluck’s assets

Protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban threatened to seize all the assets of caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra if she still defies the call of the people to resign. :surprised:

In a speech to several thousands of protesters at the Democracy Monument Saturday night, the secretary-general of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee said if the caretaker prime minister still clings to power arrogantly and ignores the people’s call, she will lose everything and will have to flee the country.

Suthep said once the people announce the victory over the Thaksin regime, all her assets would be seized.

The protest leader also disclosed that on the shutdown day, all major government offices will come under siege by protesters to prevent all officials from working or serving the caretaker government.

All major roads leading to government offices will be blocked and all government vehicles will not be allowed to pass, except city buses which will continue servicing the people.

He said houses of Ms Yingluck will also be blocked by an army of female protesters, of Surapong Tovichakchaikul, and of Kittirat na Ranong.

For Mr Surapong, also the foreign minister, Mr Suthep said he would see â€Hell on earth does exist and will experience it."

They will face mass protests that they have never seen or expected in their lives, Suthep said.

The mass protests will also be held at the homes of the national police chief and his two deputies, he said.

He also assured protesters that soldiers remain their good friends and wouldn’t harm the protesters, citing the riots in 2009 and 2010 that he and the armed forces had cooperated closely to protect the country from the rioters who now have become cabinet ministers. [Nice dig. ;) ]

Suthep insisted that the shutdown meant only to paralyze the government while business will be least affected.

Remember how her brother sent two plane loaded with baggage out of the country as "insurance" when he was gambling against a coup?

Michael Yon:

Democracy Monument, Bangkok

"After so much protests, many of the people having coming from all over Thailand and sleeping on the ground -- they have not lost energy but are gaining momentum for the big push to begin on 13 January. (At this moment, a large procession is marching peacefully through Bangkok.)

"The government has now openly threatened to use violence against unarmed, peaceful people who want to be listened to. If the government uses overwhelming force on or after the 13th to crush unarmed people, the result could be war. It will be an enormous mistake if Yingluck Shinawatra murders unarmed, peaceful people."

We have to wait and see.

Pics of big crowds on Blue Sky right now. Lots of marchers and the streets lined with well wishers. Looks like Suthep has now returned to Rachadamnern. The speaker is saying they are not against elections, but Yingluck must resign and reforms be made first.

Over 800 local officials join Bangkok Shutdown

More than 800 local administration officials in their uniform took to the protest stage at the Democracy Monument Saturday night to declare their support for the anti-government protest and to join the January 13 “Bangkok Shutdown†campaign.

The officials, who include about 600 kamnan, village headmen and their assistants from Surat Thani province alone, are the first large group to come out openly to defy the government. The rest came from Chanthaburi.

Their presence at the protest stage was greeted with applauses, cheers and whistlings from a huge crowd of protesters.

Protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban who also hailed from Surat Thani told the audience that there would be more local administration officials to join the “Bangkok Shutdown†campaign.

“This is a historic picture that will be imprinted in the hearts of the people and will be a morale booster for the great mass of people to take home the victory for the people,†said Suthep in the company of the local officials as members of the press took the group pictures.
