Coss
Coronavirus: Study finds hydroxychloroquine doesn't prevent COVID-19, as Donald Trump claims https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/world/2020/10/coronavirus-study-finds-hydroxychloroquine-doesn-t-prevent-covid-19-as-donald-trump-claims.html A malaria drug taken by US President Donald Trump to prevent COVID-19 did not show any benefit versus placebo in reducing coronavirus infection among healthcare workers, according to clinical trial results published on Wednesday. The study largely confirms results from a clinical trial in June that showed hydroxychloroquine was ineffective in preventing infection among people exposed to the new coronavirus. Trump began backing hydroxychloroquine early in the pandemic and told reporters in May he started taking the drug after two White House staffers tested positive for COVID-19. Studies have found the drug to offer little benefit as a treatment. In the study of 125 participants, four who had taken hydroxychloroquine as a preventative treatment for eight weeks contracted COVID-19, and four on placebo tested positive for the virus. All eight were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms that did not require hospitalization, according to the results published in the JAMA Internal Medicine journal. The research shows that routine use of the drug cannot be recommended among healthcare workers to prevent COVID-19, researchers from the University of Pennsylvania said. The study authors said it was possible that a trial conducted in a community with higher prevalence of the disease could allow detection of a greater benefit from the drug. In the latest trial, which was terminated before it could reach its enrollment target of 200 participants, mild side effects such as diarrhea were more common in participants taking the malaria drug compared to placebo. --- That accounts for Donald sitting funny, Adult Diapers... Steve
Economically the world endured a shutdown for roughly two years for the Spanish Flu, the second wave saw a mutated virus. The reading and videos I've seen of the epidemic was that (in America at least), everything shut down. People interacted solely to get essentials, food and water. They had far, far less scientific tools to deal with it. By 1920 the economy not only took off, but became known in the U.S. as 'The Roaring 20s'. Lockdown worked then. However, it can be argued society has changed. We are a much larger population, more densely populated, the economy is truly global. We have never been as connected economically around the world as we are today. To open the economy and doing herd mentality, you also need the infrastructure to deal with the dead as well as the people who get sick and live. Can your country handle all those bodies? Coss
The coronavirus has caused about 299,000 more deaths in the U.S. than would be expected in a typical year – two-thirds of them from COVID-19 and the rest from other causes. COVID-19 will likely be the third-leading cause of mortality in the United States this year, behind heart disease and cancer. (Washington Post) Cavanami, please explain why, in your best English, this Covid is only as bad as the Flu, per Debbie, Jason, Shirtless/Leather-Jacket-boy and your other Trumpanzee friends. Coss
Coincidentally - theres been no flu outbreak in NZ this year, some I know, have had mild colds, but only of the sort, you get one day and are gone the next. The health people, are putting it down to all this hand washing and physical distancing and avoiding the people, as having prevented the flu this year. Mind you the kids are back at school, so anything that's gonna be spread, will be spreading soon. But it's late spring/early summer now so we're all out doors, doing those Kiwi things, like rutting in the back paddock.
