Where on Ekkamai was this place? I live on Ekkamai Soi 2 and have probably gone by it hundreds of times. Don't personally go to discos so not sure which one this place is / was.

Just for clarification I'm out of town at the moment otherwise I'm sure the sirens would tell me where this place was.

Dozens die in night club fire

Fire broke out in a night club in Thong Lo during New Year's celebrations, and police said nearly 60 people were confirmed dead.

The fire at the Santika Club in Soi Ekamai occurred shortly after the joyous midnight countdown, according to Pol Lt Gen Viboon Bangthamai, deputy metropolitan police commander.

Thong Lo district police commander Pol Col Suphin Sapphuang said 59 people had been confirmed dead - 53 at the scene and six who succumbed later in hospital.

Most of the fatality victims were Thai, but foreigners have been identified from Australia, the Netherlands, Nepal and Japan. The popular club consistently attracts a mixed crowd of Thais and visitors.

At least 184 people were injured, according to emergency services at the scene, and had been rushed to 14 hospitals around Bangkok with various injuries including burns and smoke inhalation.

Fireworks lit for the New Year celebration probably torched the facilityâ??s curtain near the roof, he said.

Pol Lt Col Prawit Kantwol, one of the first officers on the scene, agreed.

"It appears that the fire started from the area of the stage where a band was playing. There were some pyrotechnics and it appears that they started the blaze," he said.

"Most of the victims died from suffocation but some were also killed in a stampede when people were trying to get out."

The two-storey club was completely gutted by the fire, with the front of the building blackened and partially collapsed.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control at about 2 a.m. and retrieved most of the bodies, he said. Fifty-three people were found dead in the club and two died at hospitals

Deaths apparently came from direct burns from the flames, from smoke inhalation and from injuries during the stampede to escape from the engulfing fire.

Most of the bodies were found in the club's basement. Police said the hi-so club had only one door for entry and exit.

Some victims were trapped in the basement of the club, which was accessed via a narrow stairwell. The roof of the building had also collapsed during the blaze.

Rescue workers placed the bodies in white shrouds, in rows in the club's parking lot for possible identification and removal.

very sad. can imagine the mess of getting out. RIP. Used to frequent this club some time back :(

the basement that I also didn't know about seems like a real deathtrap...

better locate those fire escapes before settling in any crowded club in the future.

something very weird or coincidental about this comment in the nation:

"The pub's promotion poster called the New Year Party "Goodbye Santika", apparently because the pub owner was planning to move to a new venue as the lease on the property could not be extended."

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Thursday morning travelled to Santika Club, a night club that caught fire during New Year's celebrations, to examine the situation and visit the wounded.

The death toll at the night club situated at Bangkok's Thong Lo district was 59 with 212 others injured.

The premier said the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) had set up a centre for coordinating and helping people who were injured from the fire incident at Santika Club.

According to Police commissioner-general Patcharawat Wongsuwan, arson was unlikely a possibility but relevant units continued to gather evidence to determine the main cause of the incident.

Some dead victims, both Thais and foreigners, did not have their identification documents with them, Pol Gen Patcharawat added.

Deputy police chief Jongrak Chuthanon said relatives of known or suspected victims can contact the police or local hospitals for further information.

He said the cause of the fire should be known within a week.

This is the type of place that locks the emergency doors to stop people from sneaking out without paying the checkbin.

After the Bali nightclub bombings I took a long hard look at some of the night spots I used to hang out at in the PI and decided that in the event of a fire in the front of the building it was going to be extremely fucking hard to get out of the joint.
