How far can I go?

However my question was "How far will this get me?" Would that be enough to secure an apartment, utilities, basic living expenses etc.

5kUSD at 1USD=40Baht = 200K baht.

if you find apartment for 4000Baht/month plus all other expenses and monitor your spendings closely, you can burn these 200k for 8 months and more.

its not a problem to spend 200k in a week, up to you what you are looking for.

I stayed in BKK for about a month earlier this year. With hotels, food, transportation, shopping, etc, I spent about $1500USD and was very comfortable. Some guys spend that much in a week and still cant get enough. I was able to do the tourist thing during the day then partied and drank pretty much every night. Had more than my share of the ladies as well, most of which were not of the pay for play variety, which is a huge savings if you can pull it off. It really just depends on how you want to live. That amount could last you 5 days or it could last 5 months, up to you.

Your original inquiry seemed OK to me.

Figure that 200,000 baht will last you three months. That's a good amount, and good time frame, for making an extended "test visit" to get a taste of what it would be like to live here.

For one-way relocation here, if it represents 100% of your grubstake, it is a pathetic amount to bridge your transition to self-sustaining life in Bangkok.

It is a rare individual who can come here as a farang, and quickly obtain employment that pays even US $1,000 per month, early on.

It is one thing to engineer a life here that allows long-term survival. It is quite another thing to build wealth here - i.e., something to retire on.

Good luck!

Constable Craig,

As you can see by the other replies to your post, I was not the only one to take what you had posted at face value, now it seems like you are changing tune to save face.

As for saying I spell Duh DOH...What makes you think I was trying to spell Duh?.....Look at my location under my name, DOH is the International Airport Code for Doha, the place I will be leaving in 36 hours time to come back to BKK.

FYI I Net 10K a month if you want to brag about income :neener:

I guess you meant 'big move' as in finally coming to LOS for the very first time after reading and discussing lots about it?

Anyway, another option is to buy yourself an open ticket and enjoy life here till money is gone. Whether it's 1 week or 3 months, it depends on you only.

Have fun ::

The guy simply asked a question. If these types of questions piss you off why do you bother responding? Nice juvenile income comments too.

To the original poster, don't worry about the tossers. US$5000 is enough to get yourself established. You could live comfortably for 1-3 months depending on your lifestyle. If you plan on staying, you should start looking for work as soon as you arrive.

Mr Thaiporn please tell me how long you have been in LOS?

How Many people have you seen try to make a go of it on a pittance and fail?

How many so called mates have you had to bail out to get a one way ticket back to failure?

Harsh and Abrupt.....Yes I am, but I would rather give someone a kick back into reality on a mesage board than see them fail a few thousand miles from home.

If you thought the Comments about Income were Juvenille, the conversley you have to admit that the original poster was at least just as juvenille to air the topic.

The point I Unsucesfully tried to make was it is not down to the fact what ones income is before one decides to be LOS Based, but more of a fact of what ones potential income is when one is based here.

Your "Start Looking for work as soon as you get here comment" is a totaly unexperienced statement, either one needs to relocate for full time empoyment in Thailand, or be employed as a freelancer where country of residence is insignificant in order to make a life of it.

As a few respected posters have already pointed out here, LOS is not the place to make your retirement fortune, it is a place to enjoy it.

If you want to flame me try it, at least pick a subject that you have some knowledge in...may I suggest "adopting lost causes"

Guys,

Let's try to keep to the subject at hand. No need for flames or personal attacks, either direct or subtle.

I agree that $5k is a comfortable 1 - 3 month stake.

If I said I've been here for five years you'd say ten, am I right? I suspect that is the type of mentality I'm dealing with here.

I'm sure you have been in Thailand longer than I have. With all your knowledge, instead of abrasively telling board members not to come to Thailand - without justification - why not give them some information on why so many of the people you know in Thailand have failed. That would make for a very interesting thread, and one that would benefit all those thinking about making the move.

The poster did not ask for advice on whether he should make the move to Thailand. He asked whether if he made the move US$5.000 would be enough to establish himself. You are quick to point out other peoples weak points, comprehension must be one of yours.

If US$5,000 is what you have to establish yourself, you will live within your means. 5,000 will get you established, and probably last you 3 months. Moreover, if the guy is willing to come here for three months with US$5,000 then he is probably willing to teach English to support himself. If this is the case, there is no need to organize a job before he leaves, he will be able to find something when he gets here. The sooner he finds a job the better, so that he won't need to use too much of that US$5,000.
