Old Hippie
Elef, do you mean Applications? or processes? Applications is MSN Yahoo Task bar and Kodak updater. Processes is a whole long list...A new issue, sometimes when scrolling through a list, the computer will freeze up as well...
gummigut
Might be spyware crap stuff. Could also be a memory issue. When you press control alt delete and go to performance, how much physical memory is available? When there isn't a lot of physical memory available, the computer uses your hard disk. The swapping of memory "pages" in and out of RAM can give you those glitches in response time you are describing. Could also be a rampant process that's taking up your CPU. Unfortunately it could be lots of crap <<burp>>
ALHOLK
Hi! Probably you have a program running which in short intervals use all your memory. The name of this program most likely starts with Microsoft Windows... regards ALHOLK
..
elef said:If you press ctrl-alt-del at the same time you can see what programs are running and how much memory each one is using. Note all programs which you don't recognize and especially if a number is changing all the time. After that close the window, don't stop any process else you may have a bigger problem. Post the result here Elef, a much easier way is to use HijackThis and just post the log file it generates. This is a very nice little proggie to help with things like this. Cheers, SD

elef
Hi OH, I don't see any "extra" eating your memory, but as GG suggested you've too many programs running and need more memory, as Alholk suggested most come with windows. How much do you have today? I guess you must double it. I've 512 MB on my computer and it's soon too little. Instead of buying more memory I've ordered a new pc with 1 GB which I will connect with the old - 1 y o - one! :: elef
Guest
Holy Shit Batman............ wure has a lot of progs running. And some like Symantec are real hogs IMO. He says he's running 640 MB of RAM, so I presume a 512 and a 128 module. Depending on the MB and his bios settings that might actually be slowing it down. Suggest to try taking the 128 out and run a single 512 in Slot one. Also, make sure indexing is turned off in windows, and shut down those programs you don't need running all the time. Get them out of the startup. (of course I'd just dump Norton to start !!)
Old Hippie
O.k. thanks, but this just started in the last day or so, intermittenly. Haven't added anything new, or changed anything...would adding another 512 of memory help? or just a 1GB chip instead of 2 512 chips? How do I turn off the indexing in windows? And won't dumping norton expose me to viruses? Not sure I understand your term there...of the programs listed, which would you recomend I take off the start up? O.k. thanks...think we are getting someplace...
Khun_Kong
Old Hippie said:Besides my lousy spelling and poor grammer, when I type on line, I have a problem. Essentially, I can be typing along, and the cursor/screen will freeze up, and then jump to where I finished typing, sometimes forgetting to space between words. In other words, it freezes, I type say 5 words, and then all of a sudden, it jumps and all 5 words appear...very odd...any ideas what causes this? how to fix it...? Frequently, the problem is simply the nut on the keyboard.
