Thai ruling party lawmaker, alleged mistress die in falls from Bangkok condominium

A lawmaker from Thailand's ruling party died Wednesday after falling from his 10th floor apartment, from where a woman believed to have been his mistress plunged to her death hours afterward, police said.

The body of Attapol Sanitwongchai, a 39-year-old member of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's Thai Rak Thai party, was found on the ground outside his Bangkok condominium, police Lt. Col. Sompatara Thongkomol said.

Police are investigating whether Attapol _ a lawmaker from northeastern Udon Thani province _ jumped or was pushed from the condominium, he said.

The lawmaker had quarreled with a woman believed to be his mistress in the apartment before plunging to his death, police said.

After Attapol's body was discovered, the 25-year-old woman returned to the apartment with three policemen and Attapol's father, a former lawmaker, to collect the dead man's belongings, police said.

When the father was leaving the apartment and the police officers were attending to him, leaving the woman alone, she jumped from the same spot from which Attapol apparently plunged, Sompatara said.

She was taken to a hospital where she later died.

The ruling Thai Rak Thai party won a landslide victory earlier this year and controls 377 of the 500 seats in Thailand's lower house.

I think concerning all this deaths in Thailand we just should apply a very simple rule:

As long as Khun Porntip doesn't say otherwise it must be suicide and should only be investigated as suicide by police and discussed as a suicide by national media.

All the cases where somebody hangs himself and jumps from a balcony afterwards (you might say that this is impossible in the West) or where sharp shooter kills himself with five bullets (you could think a sharp shooter should be able to do it with one bullet) only show how advanced and sophisticated the culture of suicide in Thailand is.

Compared to Thailand the old Samurai culture of Seppuku (ritual suicide) in Japan is a real primitve social function.

MP, mistress die in separate falls

Police investigation yet to uncover reasons for puzzling deaths

Death visited the Bangkok apartment of Thai Rak Thai MP Attaphol Sanitwongchai twice yesterday in puzzling circumstances. First, the 38-year-old MP fell to his death from the 10th floor of the La Masion Condominium on Soi Phaholyothin 24 at about 3am. Later, in the evening, as authorities were still investigating his death, his 25-year-old girlfriend, Wassana Sunee, apparently jumped from the same apartment. She died later from her injuries in hospital.

Witnesses said Wassana had just returned to the condominium from police questioning about the politician?s death when Attaphol?s relatives, including his father, former deputy commerce minister Chalermphol Sanitwongchai, arrived to collect the dead man?s belongings.

After Chalermphol left at about 5pm, Wassana remained with the others, the witnesses said. Shortly afterwards, the young woman jumped from the condominium?s balcony.

Lt Colonel Thanakorn Konkaew, a deputy superintendent at Phaholyothin police station, said Wassana appeared tense while being questioned. He said the woman had not been charged over the death, adding that she was examined at the Institute of Forensic Medicine and was allowed to leave to return home after questioning. Police said witnesses had heard the couple fighting, shortly before the MP plunged to his death.

Phaholyothin police chief Colonel Warawuth Thaweechai-karn said he had not determined whether Attaphol intended to kill himself, adding that at the only place where he could have been standing before he fell there were no footprints.

He quoted Wassana as saying that she and Attaphol had an argument over her relationship with his chauffeur while driving back from dinner, and that Attaphol went up to the room alone after they arrived back at the condominium.

Guards at the condominium told police that Attaphol appeared drunk when he arrived home at about 1.30am with his girlfriend.

The officer said Wassana had stayed on the ground floor until Attaphol came down from the room to ask her to come up.

Wassana told police that the two quarrelled again after she returned to the room. She said she fled and hid in the bathroom after the MP slapped her hard across the face, causing her mouth to bleed and bruising her cheek.

Wassana added that she had hidden in the bathroom until the police had arrived. She then learnt of the MP?s death.

A police source said the MP apprently fell to his death after Wassana threatened to leave him following the spat.

Warawuth said video footage from a security camera showed no sign of intruders or the presence of anybody else. The officer said the room?s window, which is the only way to access the narrow balcony, is about one metre high. The balcony had an air conditioning compressor unit installed on it and an empty fish tank, which barely left any standing room, he said.

Chalermphol said he did not believe that his son had intentionally jumped because he had no problems in either his personal or professional affairs.

?I only want to know the truth about what happened, I don?t want to take any legal action against anyone,? Chalermphol said.

He described his son as a loving family man who often made phone calls to his daughter after work. Chalermphol said he did not know his son?s girlfriend.

The MP?s common-law wife and their three-year-old daughter live in Udon Thani.

Maj-General Wichit Samathiwat, commander of the Institute of Forensic Medicine, said an autopsy had showed high levels of alcohol in Attaphol?s blood but no other toxins.

Attapol represented Udon Thani?s constituency two. His father, now president of the Udon Thani provincial administrative organisation, was a veteran MP for the northeastern province before stepping aside to make way for his son.

Several Thai Rak Thai MPs said they did not believe Attaphol had been murdered and that the death was likely either suicide or an accident.

Torphong Chaiysarn, another Thai Rak Thai MP from Udon Thani, said he was sorry to lose his young colleague.

Torphong said Attaphol was a lively person and was well liked by fellow Thai Rak Thai MPs. He said he met Attaphol during the party meeting on Tuesday and was not aware that he had any personal problems.

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, said he was sorry to hear of Attaphol?s death.

MP, mistress ?may have been killed?

The Nation

Published on June 24, 2005

The families of MP Attaphol Sanitwongchai and his mistress Wassana Sunee, who fell to their deaths from the politician?s Bangkok apartment in separate incidents on Wednesday, said yesterday that the pair might have been murdered.

Police, meanwhile, ruled out Attaphol having committed suicide. This followed an autopsy on his body.

Attaphol?s father, former de-puty commerce minister Cha-lermphol Sanitwongchai, said he did not think his son had taken his own life or died from an accident.

?My son might have been murdered, but I don?t think [Wassana] did it,? he said.

?He was outgoing and had a lot of girlfriends, so it?s unreasonable to think he took his life.

?And I don?t think it was an accident either. He?s a regular drinker and the alcohol found in his blood was not high enough to cause him to pass out and fall from the room,? he added.

?I wonder if there was another person in the room other than the two [Attaphol and Wassana] at that time.?

Chalerm-phol dismissed speculation that he had said something to Wassana that could have forced her to commit suicide when she returned to the condominium after being questioned by police.

The ex-politician said he went to the condominium to collect his son?s belongings.

Chalermphol claimed he had also offered Bt5,000 to Wassana, but she refused to accept the money.

?She asked me to say good-bye to [Attaphol] for her at his funeral,? he said.

Wassana?s mother, Jamnian Sunee, 55, said she doubted that her daughter had committed suicide.

?I don?t think it?s a suicide. She had a phobia about heights and was afraid of death,? Jamnian said.

?And I don?t believe in the theory that she pushed the MP to his death either ? she?s a lot smaller than him.?

The young pair fell to their deaths from the 10th floor of the La Maison Condominium off Phaholyothin Road in suspicious circumstances.

Attaphol, a 38-year-old Thai Rak Thai MP for Udon Thani, was found dead around 3am on Wednesday morning.

Later that evening, as authorities were still investigating his death, 25-year-old Wassana apparently jumped from the same apartment.

She died from her injuries more than an hour later in hospital.

Metropolitan Police commissioner Lt-General Pansiri Prapawat led a group of senior officers to inspect the apartment for about an hour yesterday afternoon.

Pansiri said the autopsy had shown it was unlikely the MP had killed himself.

He said Attaphol appeared to have fallen headfirst, which was unusual for a suicide.

The officer said investigators were now focusing on accident or murder as the possible causes for Attaphol?s death.

Police found latent fingerprints near the open window where the pair plunged to their deaths, he added.

Pansiri dismissed speculation that Wassana might have committed suicide due to stressful police questioning.

There were no signs that she would take her own life during the interrogation, he said.

Hi,

So, if an influential Thai dies it is investigated as a possible homicide because his parents said that it would be "unreasonable to think he took his life", but if a farang falls out of a window 30 minutes *after* he died it is considered a suicide and no further investigation is required.

Sanuk!
