True ADSL problem?

..

Recommended Posts

Carlton, it worked fine for a month and just stopped. The firmware was upgraded a month ago. It was setup through the 192.168.0.1 webpage, not the wizard.

I just tried your DOS MTU check with my current setup (using the modem). At anything over 1426, I get "Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set." I just kept lowering the number in the command line string "ping www.bangkokpost.com -f -l 1464" until I got a result. Dunno if that is valid or not? Should I try the router set with 1426 as the MTU number?

Regards,

Dan

1426+28=1454

That's the value i suggest. I don't think that it will solve the problem with the router.

When you go through the 192.168.0.1 in your browser then there should be a button somewhere (basic settings page, upper left corner?). Reset the router to factory settings and run the wizard again. Fill in the needed info and hopefully it will find the right settings to get you online. Worth a try. There aren't too many things to fill in.

I can't imagine the router to be the problem when it already worked for some time.

Fine you already updated the firmware. Please get the updated manual as well to match the firmware.

Good luck.

If you aren't lucky or decide to use the modem then I'll have to look up how to change the MTU in Win2K, which is not as easy as doing it with a router.

Suadam: Will call about passing the router if you'd still like.

As for the MTU setting... Don't really remember very much per se. I do remember that when I setup my gear I researched it (and all the other ADSL settings) and that was the setting indicated.

I've heard lots of stories about True ADSL being crap, but I haven't had any problems and I've helped folks put in routers on Wireless Road, Lang Suan, Suk. Soi 12, and Rachada. Granted that these locations would probably have decent wiring (though my house could be iffy but I've got no complaints).

Where I hear the most complaints are from folks who are doing torrents or file sharing and they aren't getting the "throughput" they would like. But that's a whole other ball of wax in my book.

RE quality of True:

Had my connection now since, I think, last December- now 9 months. No problems. Disconnect/reconnect once/day.

Might be because I live in a small condo complex (<20 units) on a soi with many Thai only buildings. Main line/feeder/trunk/whatever-it's-called is probably not overtaxed.

Be nice if you could find out how many people on a line. They have this info- I saw it on their computer screen when a friend went to sign-up (Cannot. Line full now.) showing each connection off the main line.

Don't worry about the crap going on here. If you are using True's standard modem, it's pretty easy.

You really don't need a router with one machine (unless you want to be able to use wireless if you've got a place big enough where a cord is a pain in the ass).

Suadam: Sorry, been pretty busy, haven't been on here for several days.

I'll send you a PM with my work email address that I check often.

I don't know what to tell you. I've hooked up your router for awhlie and I didn't change a thing (accept to change login and password to the ISP). Been running fine, but I guess the real test will be later on tonight. Right now I'm only hooked up to about 150 computers via bittorrent. I'll find some porno or something and get that up to 600 to 1,000 connections and we'll see if it barfs.

Was checking through some of the stuff about your router. You do have the latest firmware. There is a beta firmware version out, but I'd suggest not doing that until absolutely necessary.

There is a load of crap solely about netgear routers having the same problem you are having. Just do a general internet search on: "LCP Down" ADSL Modem. And almost everything that comes up is netgear router related.

So your router may be a bit more sensitive than others on the market. Have you been yelling at it and hurting its feelings?

If it's the line, the next thing to do is to get a meter to test noise, return loss, balance blah blah blah, but I ain't got that. Though your Netgear modem does give some of those statistics. Need to get it back to your place and see what the Attenuation and Noise stats are. Mine are quite peachy as the downstream is 24 Attenuation and 30 Noise. Well, don't know quite frankly what that means, but it's pretty close to ideal from the charts.

You're now more Centrally located no? Maybe I can bring my router over and hold a router party!!! Woohoo, how geeky can one get in Sin City????

In any event, if we do that, it has to wait till next week.

Maybe you want to try my router in the meantime?

Anyways, check your PM for my email address.

G-man,

OK, same-same issue. The line looks as such:

Downstream

Line Attenuation = 40

Noise Margin = 22

Speed = 3072

Upstream

Line Attenuation = 9

Noise Margin = 21

Speed = 512

I find it odd that the attenuation is different up to down and that makes me wonder. But I have no idea what it means.

But the darn old modem that came with the True install works fine. :dunno: Maybe I am stuck with wires strung all over the condo :(

Thanks,

SD
