Steve, it got world wide media attention and I for one was convinced it was the parents who killed her. My whole attitide was, "they turned this kid into a Barby doll then broke her like an unwanted toy." I appear to be wrong and I'm sorry and cannot begin to imagine the horror that her parents lives must have been during the last ten years.

There was a similar case in Australia in 1980 in which a baby was taken by a wild dingo and the mother sentanced to life for her murder, later being released and exonerated. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azaria_Chamberlain_disappearance

Ramsey Suspect's Bay Area TiesTaught In Petaluma School District

By Carolyn Tyler

Aug. 16 - KGO - An American citizen who once lived in the North Bay is now in custody in Thailand in connection with the murder of JonBenet Ramsey.

The suspect, John Mark Karr, lived for a time in the North Bay with his wife and three kids.

41-year-old John Karr and his then-wife, Laura, once lived in Petaluma. She told us they were married back in 1989 and lived in Alabama until the year 2000 when they moved to Petaluma.

Karr taught in the Petaluma School District as a substitute schoolteacher from December of 2000 until April of 2001. The district says they had no complaints about him. Karr also spent time as a teacher in Napa during the same period, working to become a full-fledged credentialed teacher.

In April of 2001, Karr was arrested at a school in Napa on five counts of possessing child pornography. He did serve some time in jail, but was released on his own recognizance in October and later failed to show up in court. He is wanted in Sonoma County and a warrant is still out for his arrest for failure to appear on those charges.

His teaching credential in Petaluma was suspended, then revoked for violating the education code.

Laura Karr filed for divorce after her husband was charged in 2001. When he was allowed out of jail, it was with a lot of limitations and restrictions, including supervised visits with his own children and he was not allowed to be around other children. He was ordered to stay off the computer. Investigators say he was using the computer for child pornography.

His ex-wife also says her husband did a lot of research on the JonBenet Ramsey case and also on Petaluma's own Polly Klaas.

Laura Karr also tells us she's devastated and embarrassed by these murder charges, but she does not believe that her husband did it. She says that during Christmas season of 1996 when JonBenet Ramsey was strangled and beaten to death in Colorado, they were living in Alabama at the time and she was with him the entire Christmas season.

We spoke with a former neighbor of his, Silvia Ross, who described him as "friendly, but divisive." She says that everyone in the neighborhood knew about the child pornography charges, but were afraid to talk openly about them.

More news pouring out of the USA news networks, many earlier reports/assumptions being contradicted.

Predictably, uninformed 'expert' commentators on TV news channels are speculating wildly about false premises, and continue to cite Thailand as a favorite destination for sex tourists and pedophiles.

Latest per CNN:

<< Boulder Colorado prosecutors had been investigating the suspect for at least 3 months.

<< There is an indication the suspect has recently been in email contact with a Boulder law enforcement official.

<< In 2001. Karr was fired from his teaching position in Petaluma California due to being charged with having child porn on his computer.

<< The US Immigration and Customs Department worked with Thai Immigration to locate John Karr in Bangkok.

<< A time magazine correspondent stationed in Bangkok stated Karr is not being held for any crimes committed in Thailand, as supported by the following Washington Post report:

"The suspect in the death of JonBenet Ramsey denied any connection to her murder when he was arrested at his downtown Bangkok apartment Wednesday, police said.

Lt. Gen. Suwat Tumrongsiskul said Thursday that John Mark Karr was regarded as an "undesirable person" because he was accused of committing a crime in the United States and thus his visa has been revoked.

U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the 42-year-old American was being held in Bangkok on unrelated sex charges.

But Suwat, who heads the country's immigration police, said he was unaware of any criminal charges facing the suspect in Thailand.

"When we informed him that he has been accused of committing a crime at home he denied all accusations," said another senior police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak with reporters.

Suwat said Thai police investigated the Karr _ who has been in Thailand four times over the past two years _ and made the arrest at the request of U.S. counterparts.

Suwat said he was being held pending the arrival of American officials, who were expected to escort Karr back to the United States in the next few days."

Just received this in my inbox from a friend in Bangkok:

"How's this for freaky?

The America guy who was arrested in Bangkok, Thailand yesterday for the murder 10 years ago in America of 6 year old JonBenet Ramsey a child beauty pageant contestant; worked at the school I work at in Bangkok.

Not only that but he worked in the same office as me, until he got sacked in the 2nd month

of the school year.

The guy was weird but I figured he was just a sexually frustrated gay guy who was constantly in a bad mood; I didn't have him down as a child killer.

So this school will be doing as much damage limitation as possible, how would you feel as a parent finding out that the school your child goes to hired a suspected child murderer?

Think a lot of people will be trying cover their arses....."
