Old Hippie
Fidel, Next time buying a laptop, consider a Mac. I've had mine for nearly three years, and very little occurence of virus, a few always caught by the Virus protection programme that came with it. I am actually pricing Macs now...can't decide on a Laptop or a desk top...for a laptop, I want it to store pictures and burn DVDs (all formats) when I travel...any suggestions...? carlton68
fidel, considering the problems you had I would have done a clean install. As I have some practice installing WinXP it lost its scare. My experience is that lots of these malware progs have not broken into your computer. Rather you were surfing the darker parts of the web, possibly trying a few 'patches, keygens, cracks' from unknown sources, and therefore kind of invited the buggers. Anti-virus and anti-spyware, even when up to date, can only pick up most of the shit. I've seen people surfing the web, up comes a checkbox, not understanding what it says, or not reading at all, just click 'ok' to get it out of the way. ikkrang, because your anti-virus barked a few times doesn't say it picked up on everything. The biggest safety factor is that there's much much less malware for macs than for windows machines. Of course, malware goes for the big numbers (and you'll agree many windows users are weak targets). With that in mind I'd rather go Linux than Mac. Fidel
Hi Carlton, thanks for the advice. I'll keep an eye on things and then maybe do a clean install. The main thing discouraging me from doing a clean install is the hassle of having to re-install Skype, Bittorrent, all the anti-virus stuff and so on.... I have been looking for keygens/cracks for a piece of software I don't feel like paying for, maybe that's when it happened. Or maybe it's the unprotected cyber-sex. carlton68
Keygens, cracks, patches. I stopped looking at warez sites long ago. Most downloads included malware and the site tried to install malware as well. when you download software via emule linksites or torrent linksites then most of the included patches are genuine. Most. Not all. Be carful.
Bangkoktraveler
Fidel, if you haven't done it yet, I would get your firewall up. I would not use microsoft's but one of the better firewalls which monitors ingoing and outgoing shit. The tighter your firewall is and other security you provide, the better things will be. Fidel
Hi Traveler, Firewall now up to date. I can't remember ho it was but someone suggested that I use Avast anti-virus software. I'm now using it and I credit it, above all of the other programmes, with removing the last little bastard virus from my machine.
