Old Hippie
OK, despite poor planning and procrastination, I did finally make it to Sukhothai Last week. Let me start by saying it was a very poorly planned trip, NEVER trust the Thai meteorology forecasts! I mean NEVER! I got much better forecasts/reports from http://weather.yahoo.com/regional/THXX.html All that said, I got a last minute flight on Bangkok Airways for 4100bht. I had planned to take the bus, but again, didn't plan and got the wrong info. The bus takes between 5-7 hours, and leaves at 10 a.m. Other buses leave earlier, but they apparently aren't the nice Air conditioned ones... Anyway, I arrived in Sukhothai, and based on recommendations from board members, I stayed at the Pailyn hotel... Good service, quiet, clean, restaurants with bars, and a live karaoke/music show. My room was 1200bht a night... The room was a bit "worn" and I felt it was a bit high for the area, and that far out of town, but it was very nice, and I'd stay again...maybe...it is a bit far, and a van ride into the old city costs 100bht... a songtiew costs 10bht if you want to sit and wait... it is about 6km or so from downtown. The ++ side is, there are karaoke and beer bars with massage within walking distance, English was not spoken well or at all in the places I went to. But no hassles, and all was well. The purpose was to see this place... A Unesco world heritage sight. Here are a few of the main attractions... It is a very lovely place, well worth seeing. A few things I'd do differently. First of all, I would take the bus, cheaper, and you can see stuff out the windows. I'd also stay in the old city, maybe at this place... Old City Guest House, rooms range from 150-700bht. No pool, but, a woman I met showed me her room, and said she had no problems staying there, and it all looked very good. About 100 meters from the park entrance...er maybe 200. I'd wished I'd know this before I went... Would loved to have seen it at night. Wi9ll plan better next time. Bicycle and motor bikes are available for rent. Bicycles start about 20 bht a day for a decent basic bike, on up. Motor bikes start about 200 bht a day. Both are a good way to see the park. Or you can hire a Tuk tuk to drive you around, maybe 300-400bht. Admission to the park is 40bht, and 2 additional side parks are 30 and 40 bht as well. Also, next time I go, I will go to a nearby park (forget the name) which has more ruins, and also see the Ramkhamheng museum and the Ceramic kilns. I would also make it a point to be there on a weekend to see the Sukhothai park lit up! A lot to see in that area, so plan well.

Ongchaiyai
I went there a few years ago for the Loi Krathong Festival, this year it is on November 21 - 25, with the full moon occurring on the 25th. It was a fantastic experience and worth a visit around this time of year.

chuckwoww
Very nice OH, thanks. Many years ago I stayed in the new part of town in a guesthouse by the river, took the songthaow (actually many more than song - not sure what they call those things - lot?)) out to the ruins and rented a bike. Brings back nice memories.
YimSiam
Despite being such a curmudgeon, OH, you consistently come up with fantastic photos! What's the deal, are you stealing them from someone else?! (kidding, kidding...) It's quite an artistic touch you've got, you know, open-minded, sensitive, expressive - like this guy Bruce I know... Hmmm...
