foreign airlines possibly shift operations bases after airports closure : AOC

By Thai News Agency, The Nation

Airline Operators Committee (AOC) chairman Chaiwat Nawarat said Friday airlines from other countries can shift operations bases to other airports following the week-long siege of Bangkok airports by anti-government protesters.

Chaiwat said the siege of Suvarnabhumi Airport by People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) protesters from November 25 to December 3 had adversely affected Thailand's aviation industry.

Thai News Agency quoted Chaiwat as saying he believed some foreign tourists had shifted their attention away from travelling to Thailand due to the persistent political turmoil.

Initially, he forecast, the number of tourists, passengers of various airlines, would fall by 40 per cent. The airport shutdown had prompted each airline to reduce both its inbound and outbound flights.

Should the number of passengers of each airline drop sharply, it is likely that non-Thai airlines would shift their operations bases from Thailand to other countries in the region.

The issue is of great concern because it could lessen revenue earned from tourism and many more Thais, who work with airlines, would be jobless.

"What the government should do now is to improve the security system," he said. "Armed security guards are set up to oversee the security and safety to boost confidence that Thai airports will be neither stormed nor besieged effortlessly," he said.

How did the *** thousands *** of protesters get to the airport?

/quote]

I have another question : as we learned , the airport active democrats mainly were urban subjects . While I do understand that red shirtet Korat rice farmers have time enough except when harvesting or drinking , where do the urban elitists take all the time from . Did they request temporary leave , extra holiday because mummy sick ( alternatively : buffalo ) , shut down office for a while or what ?

Who says they are elitists? Ever seen them? The rank and file of PAD look no different - no more affluent or educated - than the UDD folks. Also, there is a high percentage of women among them. But the PAD guards look sort of ... like guns for hire. Haven't they got anything better to do?

Those "through flights" do not constitute a hub. For example, NW has a hub in NRT. A bank of flights arrive from USA (LAX, DTW, MSP, SEA, SFO) and then take off about 2 hrs later (BKK, SIN, CKG, PEK, etc.). This is reversed to get pax to USA. Thus NRT sees two banks of NW flights each day.

What other airlines besides TG use BKK as a hub? :dunno:

Bangkok Airways, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, EVA Air, Thai Airways all have hubs at BKK.

A number of other airlines use it as their primary connecting airport for SE Asia and could in theory shift away, providing they can gain the required access to SIN or KUL.
