[quote name=

Whores will always outsmart punters...especially since most punters don't want to believe the truth anyway' date=' even when it hits them in the face.[/quote]

In other words: punters are like smokers: delusional

Just curious - why the constant preference for this derogatory biblical word "whore". It belongs to the mindset of those missionary preachers at the Nana entrance.

Just curious - why the constant preference for this biblical word "whore" for Thai working girls considering all the grey zones among them, the various roles they play etc ? This word belongs to the mindset of those missionary preachers at the Nana entrance. Are you one of them?

I prefer "dirty assed ho's"...

or;

Call girl, escort, fallen woman, harlot, hooker, hustler, lady of the evening, pro, slut, streetwalker, strumpet, tramp, working girl, call girl, courtesan, scarlet woman, tart, baggage, hussy, wanton wench...

or

Pro Statuere (if you like latin).

What I like about the word whore is the shock value. Hooker also gets a few similar head turns. But as I said, no need to be PC with this, or sanitize any of it. May not really be that derogatory it seems...depends on the source of course...

Since I'm not a native English/American speaker I might be wrong

about the biblical connotation.

But can you really reduce her to being just a "whore" even outside her interaction with a "punter"? What about a typical Thermae girl's relation to her Thai husband when she is not doing her business with her Japanese clients?

But even regarding her "professional" role I am reluctant to use the same term for a Thai working girl as for a Western street walker or call girl. A Western reader who has never been to Thailand associates the word "whore" with something quite different from a typical Thermae or Soi 33 girl, not least in terms of polite behaviour and neat appearance, rejection of drug, nicotine and alcohol abuse etc. The reductionist technical definition of "whore" might counterdict our intuitive perception of these girls.

And as usual I follow my intuitiion...

But of course, a client must understand that in her professional role nevertheless it is only about money and one must never try to diffuse the line between her professionel and private sphere. Those generous - and polite - Japanese clients seem mostly to understand this distinction perfectly, some Western Romeos obviously don't.

Hi Munchy,

I'm not crazy about it either, but is a lot like 'c*nt' : a large part of the shock value depends on whether its simply a part of a sentence or spat out as an insult. It gets old when you are trying to have a conversation with someone and all they can say is 'f*ck this and c*nting that', but when obscenity is used for emphasis, I have no problem with it. If, as OH suggests, whore is a generic term for a prostitute (and Wikipedia supports him on this), then so be it, but I'll stick with 'working girl'. Its probably the words that are usually appended/prepended to 'whore', like 'dirty' and 'thieving', that give it so much of its cachet as an insult.

One of the more interesting developments of the last 20 or so years is the way the word 'slut' is bandied around - often as a badge of honour by both men and women in the Gen X/Y age group - when it was such a scalding insult for so long prior to about 1990, at least in my part of the world. My question is this : if a woman screws anything with a pulse, often for little more than a nights worth of drinks, is she a 'whore' ? Cabfare, dinner, flowers, jewellery - its all accepted as 'payment in lieu' : the difference is that she doesnt have to provide anything in return. I think I'll stick with the ho's. :smirk:

A distinction between a whore doing her job, and her relationship with her Thai husband..? She is still a whore, that is her job, maybe he knows, maybe he doesn't. Maybe he cares, maybe he doesn't. If he cares, and he has no clue, then his wife is a lying whore.

A bricklayer does not stop being a brick layer by trade when he sits down to eat dinner with the family, he's still a bricklayer, even when he isn't working.

As for whores, After awhile, the job becomes who and what they are, always on the game, always looking for another trick. Exceptions do apply of course, but in most cases, after awhile, the job consumes them.

There was a time when I had a problem with the word as well, but then I realized, they are indeed whores, and the shoe fit. I don't buy into all the PC crap and sensitivity crap some here use. Whore is just a word, and a proper word at that. Take it anyway you like. I have grown passed my need to sanitize any of this. We are all part of the same game, the same hypocrisy.
