'Red Shirt' Demonstrators Claim Military Involvement In Attacks

PATTAYA, April 11 (Bernama) -- Anti-government protestors in red shirts today accused the military of disguising their men in blue shirts and attacking them with nails, "ping pong" bombs and smoke bombs during a clash here this morning.

Their leader, Arismun Pongruanrong, said they had confiscated dozens of blue shirts found at temporary military outposts along the road leading to the Pattaya Exhibition and Convention Hall (Peach).

He said Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva must take responsibility to cancel the Summit as well as step down from the post which he had held since December.

"The government sponsored this attack on us... we have the proof to show that the soldiers were disguised in blue shirts and attacked us. We even found some spent bullets," he told a media conference inside Peach as hundreds of protestors shouted anti-government slogans outside.

He said several people, including women, were injured and hospitalised. The red shirts, linked to ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, began their siege of Government House, the office of the Prime Minister, on March 26 in Bangkok before blocking major roads on Wednesday in their move to topple the Abhisit government.

Arismun, a former popular singer, was also an ex-lawmaker under Thaksin's Thai Rak Thai Party, which was dissolved by the Constitution Court after Thaksin's ouster in September 2006.

He also accused that Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, who is in charge of security matters, had met a former Thaksin ally, Newin Chidchob, here last night to plot today's clash.

"They met at a restaurant at Jomtien Beach last night. They plotted and planned the attack by blue shirts against the red shirts," he said.

Thai government spokesman Panithan Watanayagorn said police were investigating the incident and in the process of identifying the suspects involved.

He said it was too early to point fingers at any particular group, adding that the situation was under control and at no time the safety of leaders attending the Asean Summit was at stake.

Panithan said Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was expected to arrive as planned in this resort city today despite the ongoing protests and uncertainty over the fate of the Summit.

Protesters ride tanks in bizarre Bangkok emergency

Waving red flags and shouting slogans, jubilant anti-government protesters stood atop one of a pair of armoured cars as they sped down a Bangkok highway - driven by soldiers. :alert:

The bizarre scene unfolded after a state of emergency was declared to quell the demonstrations, sending tanks and armoured vehicles fanning into the streets of the capital backed by scores of troops.

It was unclear whether the soldiers deployed to enforce the security measure were sympathetic to the demonstrators' cause, or just giving them a friendly lift. :alert:

But it underscored the way that the army has repeatedly been reluctant to use force during months of political turmoil despite the orders of their political masters.

The protesters, who want Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to quit, have capitalised on this apparent ambivalence to wreck an Asian summit in the beach resort of Pattaya, and then cause chaos in the capital over the weekend.

"We have only our hearts and bare hands. You should come straight away, don't mess around, none of us are afraid. We are are fighting for our future and for the next generation," core protester Jatuporn Prompan said.

Outside one of Thailand's swankiest shopping centres, Siam Paragon, tank track marks were visible for hundreds of metres along the busy boulevard usually packed with shoppers on a Sunday.

In one section, the caterpillar tracks had torn up the pavement and some sharp turns in the movement of the tank left a visible record in the bitumen.

Near some of the protests, revellers marking the Thai New Year festival of Songkran soaked each other with pump-action water pistols in a traditional show of good spirits. :alert:

But elsewhere the mood was much darker as the demonstrators loyal to ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra lashed out at targets linked to Abhisit's four-month-old administration.

At the interior ministry in Bangkok one of the so-called "Red Shirts" grabbed a gun from a security guard and fired into the air after chasing a car they mistakenly believed was carrying Abhisit.

A red-shirted mob armed with sticks and paving slabs set upon the vehicle, crashing their weapons onto the roof and windows. One of the attackers was a saffron-robed Buddhist monk. :alert:

Later a car apparently carrying an official ploughed into a crash barrier and became trapped when protesters tried to attack it. Blood could be seen pouring from the nose of the driver.

Military and police forces were on alert Sunday night as the government stood firm behind its order for rioters to clear the streets or face harsher measures under a state of emergency.

Armed soldiers supported by armoured personnel carriers and police in riot gear were deployed across the city on Sunday as members of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship vowed to fight to the death to overthrow the Democrat-led government.

The government declared a state of emergency over Bangkok and surrounding provinces after red shirt protesters went on a rampage, attacking senior government officials, bodyguards and police.
