I wonder if it will apply to just U.S. citizens or to anyone entering the U.S. I've only been searched for DVD's and agracultural products coming from Thailand. I hardly ever travel with my laptop.

The US border agents have the right to confiscate any electronic device which might store data for an unspecified length of time. Also they have the right to copy a hard disk and to encrypt its content. This has already happened several times to higher ranking business travelers from all over the world. These consfications don't have anything to do with the prevention of terrorist acts are search for pornographic images e.g..

Last year international media reported these confiscations. What was not really mentioned is the fact that the US is very strong in industrial espionage even against its closest allies and that CIA is working closely together with US companies. IMHO it is apparent and that the notebooks have been copied for this reason...

Anyway' date=' travelers are neither being told how long their notebooks are being held nor what happens with the data copied and it seems that some non US companies know have the policy to travel to the US only with empty notebooks.

After the cold war in the '90s our intel agencies tried to justify their existence by pulling fax and phone calls off of satelites in europe and passing on info such as prospective mergers and acquisitions, industrial secrets, etc.

The EU complained about it at the time I recall.

Untiil it happens to someone famous or someone with some pull I don't think anything will happen soon. I hope it does pass. I like Russ Feingold. He's always been one of the Dems I considered to have integrity.

The erosion of civil liberties to me is the worse offense of the last administration (i.e. Patriots Act). Its made me not consider voting for that party again (Ron Paul the sole exception). They have set a precedence for some future President to use. Surprising that its the party that always said the government should stay out of people's lives.

Given the right set of circumstances, it will be done again.

Here is another issue. Say you have a pic of some BG you banged from Soi Cowboyo and she looks far younger than her 21 years. How do you prove she is not under age if you are asked about it?

You could even have the pic of the little boy you sponsor for some charity. The one you send money to via an organization in Africa or Asia.

Think of the expense to have to prove your innocence?

Simple

Stay the Fux out of USA

Although its growing here, I recall being dismayed at all the cctv cameras in Britain.

That would be considered a violation of civil liberties by many Americans.

There are also rules of evidence, etc. that would be in violation of American jurisprudence as well.

All the western countries have laws that others would not consider viable or wanted in their own countries.

That said, the way our country is going, it is getting scary. The problem is if one leaves for more freedom and more civil liberties where could they go?

I suppose it is. We have the technology to take it a higher level.

I wouldnt' be surprised if the Chinese breached the fire wall of large defense firms and research universities as well.

I also recall a french spy in Euro Disney and deemed it a Mickey Mouse operation. Sorry, it was too hard to resist.

"I assume that the USA is the most vicious at disregarding our civil rights as we come through Customs."

Makes me wonder how many countries you have entered? Any Middle Eastern ones lately?

TH

PS - SD, not directed at you, but the OP.

the thai navy dont give immigrants the chance of going through customs. they tow them out to sea and leave them. yes us border staff are the worst.
