Tourist arrivals in the Asia-Pacific fell 2.8 per cent year on year in last year's fourth quarter, with Thailand leading the plunge with a 28-percent decline, the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) revealed Wednesday.

PATA compiles travel statistics for 37 destinations in Asia, the Pacific islands and the Americas.

The association noted a "dramatic downturn" in fourth-quarter arrivals in Japan, Thailand and Sri Lanka, reflecting "both the worsening global economic climate and regional/national issues".

For the fourth quarter, international tourist arrivals fell 28 per cent in Thailand, 15.6 per cent in Sri Lanka, 15.5 per cent in Hawaii and Tahiti and 12.2 per cent in Japan, PATA said. - Deutsche Presse-Agentur

Didn't I see someone from TAT saying that Tourism in Thailand was not declining?

I meant that a lot of tourists probably come here who would not go to places like Sri Lanka or Tahiti. Thus it's logical that Thailand would take a bigger hit than they would. And Hawaii is a domestic flight for Americans. Hawaii's tourism should hold up better.

:dunno:

Govt mulls image boosting exercise

The government has been advised to set aside 400 million baht to restore the country's image tainted by political troubles and last year's airport seizures by protesters.

The special budget was recommended by Sathaporn Kavitanont, head of the prime minister's economic advisory team, and forwarded to the cabinet meeting Wednesday.

Mr Sathaporn also recommended the Secretariat of the Prime Minister appoint a committee to oversee the restoration of the Kingdom's image and the rebuilding of international confidence in the Thai economy.

The panel should work to promote the country's image through such global channels as CNN and CNBC. Activities should include a regional economic meeting and a forum of senior executives of the world's leading companies.

Image is everything....the reality maybe somewhat different. It isn't cheap here for many tourists...and a lot of folks don't have money or are saving. So, sure, boost the image...have at it....but less folks are traveling.

Thus such an exercise is a waste of money.

I'm guessing that the airport closure accounted for a huge chunk of the 28% 4th quarter decline. I personally know two people who cancelled their trips to Thailand because of it; could've rescheduled, but said "piss on it" and went to Hawaii.

The world economy also had something to do with it. Got off the phone with Ms Hoy a few hours ago. She owns a small store in Siem Reap. Says biz is very bad and a lot of stores are closing due to lack of tourists. "High Season" in SEA really took a hit this year.
