[color:red] "Oddly, some on the right want to get rid of ALL the plans such as SSi and Medicare etc...no alternative suggested, just get rid of them...sad is, it is all many have, and all some of us may have in the future as more and more benefits to working people get cut.

If they get rid of SSI and medicare, do the Conservatives also want to get rid of government employees health plans and get rid of healthcare for retired government employees?

I say get rid of the healthcare for government employees and those government employees who are retired. In about one month, we will have national healthcare.

Two of President Barack Obama's economic heavyweights said middle-class taxes might have to go up to pare budget deficits or to pay for the proposed overhaul of the nation's health care system...

I expect that the lady is getting (was getting) benefits far in excess of medi-cal from the government, such as supplemental social security, food stamps, housing sllowance, breaks on utilities? As a former mid-level manager, I suspect that she had the smarts to put some $$ away for a rainy day? Also, nanny's can make some good bucks, especially if the income is under the table and tax-free. I wonder how many other clients she might have had a similar arrangement?

Don't know if she lived in Silicon Valley, but if so, I imagine she's accumulated some significant wealth in her home...if she bought one. Could use that...or sell it and move to a place that is a LOT less expensive.

First, OH is absolutely right. In order to qualify for all of these "benefits", she literally had to go broke. She did not own a home (median home prices of $750K here, a shack in a slum for #500K).

From me she was getting about $20k per year for about 25 hours per week. She had a few other odd jobs, but nothing significant or steady. That housing subsidy "allowed" her to rent a place for $1000 a month, and she had to sublet the bedroom to make ends meet. The rest of her benefits, I don't know.

She was always desperate for money to pay for meds, dental work, whatever. Finally ended up moving to N. Carolina to live with her son in the military. No doubt still on various forms of gov't assistance.

What surprised me was the Conservatives found nothing wrong with a 636 billion dollar military budget and a 50.5 billion dollar budget for homeland security[color:red] totaling almost 700 billion dollars. With personal income tax receipts expecting to be only [color:red]972 billion dollars, you would think Conservatives would have questioned these 2 budget expenses a little more.

Obama keeps insisting that his health plan (whichever one it may be) will not result in deficiet spending. Well, duh...yeah it won't if he raises taxes. And that will be his only option. He'll make people pay more taxes and get less. And he'll have told another lie about not increasing the taxes of the middle class. It just isn't possible any other way.

It's gonna start with the Demoncrat congress and Borat Obama refusing to extend the tax cuts we've enjoyed for several years under the Bush Administration. For most folks, that will add up to an average of $3000/year. But it still won't be enough. But not to worry. A "luxury" tax will be imposed on those who have the means to pay (on their own) over $15,000 for health insurance. That's right: tax initiative and personal responsibility. What else would a good socialist/commie do? I mean, what gives people the right to take care of themselves and pay what they want to pay. The audacity !!!

Of course, many middle and lower-middle class families will not be able to even send their kids to community colleges after the taxes are raised to pay for other people's misfortune. Nobody said life was fair and no matter how much social engineering even the most ardent, evil socialist will ever be able to change that.

This guy is gonna be a one-termer.

I've said this before, I'll say it again, Traditionally, Democrats tax then spend, republicans spend then tax, neither one is really sustainable in the long term, especially if the costs keep rising. This is the problem with insurance and pension funds, both have been managed very poorly, regardless of political party.

As for Obama, being a 1 termer, you may be right, but a lot will come down to who the republicans run...which is basically why he got in this time...additionally, all the stonewalling on the right is not helping their cause with swing voters, who may blame them for blocking things like health care...The right can take it back, ONLY if they change their game and attitude.

Baseball has a luxury tax. Why not health insurance? I don't think very many americans, except for the extremely wealthy, pay their health insurance policy on their own. They have acorporation or business pay it and take less income/incentivies. That way, they can switch from taxible income to a better health insurance policy, which isn't taxible, until now. Why should I feel sorry for this person?
